I have a 2000 Ranger xlt.Has the 4.0 in it.The **** that controls the heat and a/c I am having problems with. The a/c works in almost all positions. The only one it doesnt work on is the one to the floor only on the right side of the switch. The a/c should only work in the a/c position and the max a/c position.
I replaced the whole switch assembly with another one from another ranger. But it still lets the a/c come on in any positions.
I think it may vary... My vehicles have the A/C engaged in full defrost, mixed defrost/heat, Max A/C, and the A/C position, going anti-clockwise around the dial. It is off in floor, off and vent positions.
If want full control, you can put a switch in the circuit to cut the power to the compressor clutch whenever you don't want to run the compressor. I've been tempted, but haven't gotten irked enough to do it.

I am here to agree with all that say the AC works on all positions except off and vent (vent air will be hot) and I have played with this for a while and changed out the switch and all.
my 2002 runs doesn't run the A/C in Off, Vent or The floor only position. It runs in all other positions: A/C, Max A/C, mix vent and floor, Def and def/floor.
