Ford Diagnostic Plug Fuse
On a F350 OBD plug or diagnostic plug that isn't working because of a blown fuse, can Ford still retrieve codes? I have an appointment with the owner of the dealer and need to know this before seeing him.
Thanks
I believe your answer is that, yes, they can still use your OBD port if their system has it's own power source, and it does (laptop). But you could not use a scanner or tuner or monitor, because those devices take their power from the port. I readily confess that the above is an educated guess and I could be wrong.
His question is could they have actually read codes without having power to the port. If they couldn't, then they likely lied to him.
You need someone like Mr. Cheezit to answer this question. I don't know how their code readers work.
I know with my AE, the device that connects to the OBD-II port is powered by the port, then you connect a USB or serial cable to the device. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work without power to the OBD-II port.
But I don't know if the dealer equipment works the same way.
The reason for my question is I have had several problems at my local dealer. We just moved to this small town from Va. Beach after finishing up 30 yrs in the Navy.
I took my truck in for a oil change and new brakes and all points inspection.
Truck was cutting out while driving home from the dealer so I went under the hood and saw the clamps to my air filter and Turbo loose. I also checked and found that I was 2 quarts low on tranny fluid.
I called the service manager at the dealer and he apologized for sloppy work and not catching the low tranny fluid on inspection.
He said bring your truck in and I will do a diagnostic check to see why it was cutting out.
They came to me with four codes. P1832 which is a 4x4 circuit failure and said my 4x4 wasn't working and it would be 200.00. I told him my 4 x 4 was fine and he went to the last code P0299 and said the turbo was bad and at minimum would need to be cleaned at 550.00 and there was a 50 50 chance they would find my center housing cracked and that would be another 1000.00.
I made an appointment to have the turbo done. Well before the appointment I started second guessing them due to the poor service on the first visit. I was also curious why he didn't say anything about the P0470 code they said I had.
Well after reading this great forum and and input from Cheezit I found out that P0470 is a faulty EBP sensor and it in itself can cause a P0299 code and the turbo to malfunction as well as other things.
It upset me that the dealer wanted me to spend big money on a turbo cleaning or even a new turbo when they didn't even address the EBP code and the fact it should have been fixed first to see if that was the problem and not the turbo.
Well I bought a new EBP sensor and installed it myself and have had no more problems with cutting out or turbo issues.
Which led to the above question. At the time this dealer handed me those codes my OBD/lighter fuse was blown and had been. So I have a meeting with the dealers owner and just trying to get my facts straight. Even if they could get the codes there is no excuse in their sloppy work and the fact that they didn't know or chose to tell me that a 80.00 part could have fixed everything and wanted me to spend big bucks on the turbo which wouldn't have fixed the truck. The 80.00 EBP sensor I intsalled did.
If they couldnt get the codes because of the fuse then that's even worse. That means they lied to me.
I am not, by norm a complainer. Loved my dealer and its service in Va. Beach. However if a dealer tries to screw me Im going after them. Do you know how long it took to type all that being the two finger typist I am
