Thumbs down Help!97 Explorer brkn door handles

Both of my rear interior door handles were "broken " by a certain 9 yr old. While replacing the drivers side- the arm from the interior handle to the latch moves, but doesn't activate it. Child lock is not on/ door is unlocked. I have the new interior door handle, but I'm stumped!!!!!

and squirt lots oil into the latch mechanism. Keep doing this and operate the handle gently about 30 times. It will start working and drip a lot of oil. As you know, the handle only operates a thin steel wire which easily bends if there is any resistance. The door latch dries out and corrodes.

If in fact He did bend the arm from the handle to the latch, How do I disconnect it from the latch to bend it back?? I can see it is connected through a small moving plastic bracket at the bottom of the latch

being able to straighten it by reaching in when the door panel is removed. The whole thing with the child proof lever seems like too much of a gimick. I must admit that this is something I might do again. I never have any problem with it but other people do. Seems I need to apply a little pressure pushing the door out in order to get it open. Thought I might try moving the door post first. Hasn't been a priority because someone uses the back seat only about three times a year.
