once you break one you are guaranteed to continue to break them. there is a piece in the door you have to replace. someone should come along with more info on this part since i can't remember it's name
If you broke the handle that opens the door no problem and you won't need a new door panel. That is unless you tore it up trying to get out. LOL.
You can get a new handle at the dealer for around 10-15 bucks.
If your handle feels like you have to yank it to get it open your mechanism is getting some wear.
I had that problem and here is what I did:
Remove the panel. Remove the interior handle assembly. There is a cable that actuates the latch in there. You will need to take that cable and twist it a few times in the direction that it is wound. Then you can reassemble it while it is still twisted. What you are doing here is making the cable shorter by twisting it tighter.
There is one other option, buy a new assembly at the dealer for $100 or so. I can't remember how much it was exactly but it was so high that I told them to forget it. I can open the door from the outside for the rest of my life before I pay that amount.
ouch! careful neil, that cable gets brittle after all these years, an easier quick fix for that problem is to simply bend the tab that the cable ball is attached too to "shorten the cable". if the cable breaks they come with a free latch...lol
The above described by Neil is the exact scenario. I knew this day would come. It would always happen when the door would not fully close, then you would try with the handle and get nothing. I went out yesterday and had the same thing go down, but this time it snapped off. I was on Powerstrokeshop.coms site last nite and they have a bunch of these door parts for pretty cheap. I would like to get at least the handle and the cable locally for speed, but I might me dreaming!
Keep in mind when you order it may not just be the cable that is stretched as was in my case. Mine had a place where it would pivot and the case around it is getting wallered out. Seems like they shoulda put a bushing in there??? Anyway Joe I had no problem twisting the cable and it didn't give any indication that is was getting brittle either. Then again I am not in the rust belt either. Also for some reason I can't remember I couldn't bend the tab. I think it was a clearance issue or something. I guess I'll have to disassemble in my spare time and document with pics. LOL.
I am seeing a listing for the assembly at the inside handle end and that piece is 100.00 plus. They are not showing the cable as available but I might try calling them. I think the handle will be the easy part. I guess the only way to know what to buy is to take the door down first.
I think I have one for a 96 F250..........just the door handle........a guy gave me a couple a few years back.........if they are interchangeable I send you one..............if not I would like to keep the drivers door one........just in case mine ever breaks..........I'll take a look this morning.........send me a email at Mike8623@aol.com and I'll let you know......I'll just send it to you.......folks on here have been pretty good to me........
neil, mine isnt rusty inside the doors, and we must be thinkin of a different tab to bend, there is plenty of room to bend the tab i am talking about.... hmmm which one are you thinking of?
Sorry boys I made a mistake........I just took a look........I don't have two door handles........the guy gave me two window crank handles and one door handle metal...............I think i would like to keep the inside door metal piece and one window handle..........but if someone really needs a window crank handle for a 96 let me know........I'll let one go for free including postage....but let someone that really needs one speak up I don't mind sharing a few extras.......

Like I said it was many moons ago but if I remember correctly one end of the cable had a slot or groove thingy and I can't remember the other end. but I don't remember there being alot of room in there with the mechanism. Anyway my memory ain't all that great that is why I take alot of pics. I shoulda done it that day also. If I get time I will look at it and hopefully take pics.
The door is now fixed! I went ahead and spent the money on the entire kit at 130.00. You can no longer buy the cable by itself, but it comes as the complete kit. It is not a very quick job, but in the end it was worth it, as it feels like a brand new door. Oh by the way, the handle does NOT come in the kit, go figure, it is an extra 12.50.
The problem that you speak of is EXACTLY why I chose to replace the entire set up. I figured the same would be true of mine, having to replace handles one after another. I am sure the cable twist will work for awhile.
