Bearing time?

Well we are 5,000 miles shy of 100,000 miles and I am about to tear into the brakes, take care of the hubs and all of that good stuff. Should I replace the bearings while I am in there also? On our last trip form Colorado to Louisiana I would get a while and slight vibration coming from what felt like the front right side. The fluid levels were all good and the only thing I can think of is maybe bearings going bad. It hasn't happend since but we also haven't really driven for extended periods of time either.

Cliff Notes: Almost to 100,000 miles front wheel bearings yes / no?

Yup if you are in there, you might as well change them out at the same time as the rest of the mainenance in that area. I used Moog, just remember if you use them...do NOT use an impact to tighten them. You must use a hand operated manual torque wrench or you'll bottom them out and ruin them. Also the greese zerk for the top bearing will hit the front universal joint, so greese it, take it out, and cap the hole.

If you have an extra $600+ laying around for replacements then I say go for it.

If not, then lube yours yourself. Especially if they aren't making any noise. Pull the ABS sensor and add some grease. (There's a write up here in the forum. It works.)

I assumed from his original post that he was doing his own work...the bearings and ***** joints are not more than a $200-$300 of parts for a do it yourselfer...sorry that I assumed as much on my part...

Good luck!

I was thinking that he'd do both sides at the same time. I mean, really...who does just one bearing??

Only one thing to say here, Ford! Plus lots of guys replace only one side. Me, I had one abs sensor go out and bought a new hub with sensor to replace it, and at a good price, so guess what, I did both sides and kept my old ones as spare parts. But that is me.

When you have it apart I would check out the ball joints and the bearing on that side and then see if parts need to be replaced. If they are at the point of replacement and you can afford it then go ahead and replace, but not necessary just because if everything checks out good. Just my humble opinion.

If you are changing out the bearings you should look at your axle stubs also. I had to replace both stubs when I did my bearings and ball joints.

No

I don't fix things until they are broken myself. Chances are the wheel bearings will still be good when you sell the truck. Also, you can grease those bearings through the abs hole. Guzzle did it on his wheel hubs as you can see in the picture on his website but didn't mention it for some reason. I did mine a year ago and there is no leaking grease or any other drawbacks, just a much needed shot of grease. Each side took a whole mini-tube of wheel bearing grease. Do the needles also.

Bearing time?

Do you have to remove the bearing to grease it the way you did? I haven't looked at it but how do you know when to stop pumping grease?

Well thanks for the opinions. I really don't have the money so I think I am going to try and grease them through the abs hole. I have looked at Guzzles site but must have missed his write up on that, guess I need to look again.

Pull the wheel.

Remove the ABS sensor.

Put grease in hole.

Use whatever method/tool makes it easiest. I didn't use a funnel, for example. I would spin the wheel a few times to distribute the grease. While I didn't put in a whole tube for one, I probably put in half on each side.

Guzzle didn't mention how to do it but look at the picture on his site and you can see the grease oozing out of the wheel hub. I would recommend pumping in grease until you can see it coming out where the parts mate (you will see it). I spun mine a little to even it out. I have had no problems such as grease leaking on wheels, etc.
