m5r2 shift fork replacement
It looked a bit more complicated on the diagram then it really was so I ended up heading out to a transmission shop and they replaced it for me for only $10 (after I removed the top plate and brought in the parts).
If anyone else is looking for information, the way i watched the man do it is as followed
1. remove top plate and put it in a solid table vise to work on it. Use a star wrench to pull the brass ring on the top, remove the washers underneath it and pull the rest of the shift lever out of plate.
2. flip the plate over and use a hammer and punch to remove the small circle pin in the shift fork on the 3rd-4th shift rail
3. remove the 3 rubber grommets on the end of the top plate and use a hammer and punch to push the 3rd-4th shift rail forward, this will cause the rail to push the metal plug on the other end of the top plate out, be ready to catch them, they come out quick. Its best not to knock the rail out all the way, just enough to pull the fork off
4. Knock out the metal pin on the 1st-2nd shift fork then use a hammer to knock that rail out the same way you did the other. Be sure to only push it forward enough to pull the fork off.
5. Install is pretty much the reverse of removal. Put the 1st-2nd fork on first, put the metal pin back in the fork, then use a hammer to tap the rail back in. When you reach the second seat for the rail, use a pin or screwdriver to hold the ball and spring in, then push the rail all the way in
6. Drop the 3rd-4th fork in place between the other two forks, then push the rail through it and put the metal pin back in. You need to hold down the ball and spring in the second rail seat on this one too.
7. When you have the two rails seated again, knock the two metal plugs back into their seats on the plate, flip it over and reinstall the shift lever and washers, then top brass ring.
8. reinstall the rubber grommets. put some silicon on them so they don't leak.
I also recommend buying a shift repair kit from Ford and put that in while you have everything apart. Given I only watched someone do this and didn't do it myself, I may have missed something but I covered it the best I could. Hope this helps someone!
