All,
I have a 1962 Ford F100. It does not have the original engine. I know this thanks to NumberDummy who told me it came with a 223 Inline V6. I have a V8 in it, but I am not sure what size it is.
Is there any way to tell what size engine it from the markings on the engine?
I want to add power steering and need to know what components are needed. I have ordered the power steering pump with resovoir, but it may be the wrong one since I do not have the original engine. Can anyone help me understand what components I need to make this truck have power steering?
A 62 F100 had dealer instaslled hydraulic assist steering. It consists of a hydraulic cylinder mounted to the tie rod that assists you with your steering. It is an available part from CPP costs about a grand. The other option is dakota gearheads toyota based kit that also costs about a grand.
The engine is identifiable. Lets start with is the distributor coloser to the firewall or the radiator?
flipklos,
Thanks for the response. Quick question on the hydraulic assist steering, is that the official part name? Also, what are you referring to with CPP? I am truly a newbie. Sorry for all the questions.
The distributor is closer to the radiator...near front of the engine
The only way to know 100% what motor you have is to measure the stroke of the piston. Fe engine blocks all look the same and have a 352 stamped on the front of the block, well 98% do. So you need to pull out a spark plug, use a coat hanger or thin dowell in the hole to measure how far up and down the piston travels.
Thanks for the response Bill, but I am not sure I understand what I need to identify to determine if it is a 352/360/390. Please explain...
The gasket between the cylinder head and the intake sit's under the valve cover, i guess it could be hard to see if the engine has grease and oil build up.
If this works as my browser is messing up. This is what Bill is saying about the valve cover overlapping the intake on The FE in my 62. There are pics in my album and Gallery that may help also. I can't post them here for some reason.
CPP is classic performance products. They are a company that makes parts of various types for older vehicles.
Stroke on a 352/360 is 3.5" On a 390/406 it is 3.78" on 428/410 it is 3.98"
/427
406, 427, and 410 are rare engines so I doubt you have one of them. 428 is kinda rare nowdays. 360 and 352 have a slightly differnet bore, hence the different displacements. This engine aint period correct. Other than a hefty appetite for fuel they are good engines however.
