Always had high emissions with my engine in RV and wondering if one of the plugs has failed that emissions would be high?
Otherwise anyone know the most likely reasons for high emissions? and how to identify and fix them?
rick, high in what way? If you are dealing with high HC, as in rich condition, the Holley carburetor on those can have two problems. The first is the power valve, it will fail and leak raw fuel into the intake giving a very rich idle, and with it failed the cruise will also be rich. The second problem is caused by the secondary metering plate warping causing fuel to leak past into the secondary idle circuits.
Other items, PCV valve, is it working correctly, the air injection system, if it is like the pickup engine, there are two systems, one feeds 6 of the eight exhaust ports, the other feeds all eight exhaust runners. EGR valve, is it opening? Vacuum advance, is it good? Centrifugal advance, is it free?
On your right side valve cover, along the inside is a vacuum harness, near the center it passes over the exhaust crossover. Heat from the crossover can burn through some or all of these plastic tubes.
Just bought an 86 E350 motorhome with a 460. It had dual smog pumps that are missing. I have the smog air manifolds but nothing beyond that. Is this a van only thing as I have not found an F350 with dual pumps?
Anyone have parts so I can put this back on the road?
Need 4bbl carb, both smog pumps with pulleys, possibly need the diverter valves.
Dual pumps are the same on 460 pickups of this era.
You should be able to find the bracketry and everything at the junk yard.
I would recommend the purchase of a new 600 cfm square bore vacuum secondary carburetor though. (unless you live in California)
85041, where are you located? I just removed both pumps from my F350 as part of my conversion to EFI. Unfortunately for you, I haven't removed the rest of the system yet as you probably need all the plumbing, vacuum lines etc. Almost all the 85-87 Over 8500 GVW 460s I have seen have dual air pumps and no catalytic converter. If you can wait till I finish with mine I will have everything you need including the Holley 4180 carb.
85041, can you explain what smog air manifolds are? I also have dual pumps but not sure what smog air manifolds are and if I should have them. I am currently trying to smog my 460 so I will be watching this one closely for any tips.
These exhaust manifolds have ports and stainless steel plumbing so the A.I.R. pumps can inject air into them.
With no catalytic convertor found on the heavy duty vehicles it was Ford's way of burning off excess hydrocarbons.

Ok, I don't have those, and a quick glance under the hood tells me I may not have dual pumps like I thought I did. I have an 8600 gvw non catalyist truck, does this mean I need those or is it possible the truck never had them?
I think this thread could be a good one, people always ask for carb or performance help but I think a good emissions thread could help a lot of guys with a lot of issues.
85lebaront2. I am in Phoenix AZ. My engine has the air injectin manifolds like those shown by ArdWrknTrk. I am no immediate rush but would like to get it done in the next couple of months. Willing to buy the package from you and be done with it.
I think if you live in Southern California you'll need any emissions related components that came from the factory to be installed and functional.
What year and model do you have?
What does your emissions compliance sticker say?

I've seen a lot of F-350's w/ the 460.
They all seem to have the same setup as I do, with both the injector manifolds *and* the crossover pipe at the back of the heads connected to the thermactor ports with the check valve atop.
I am not sure if Ford did anything different for California emissions in an over 8500GVW truck back then.
There should be a compliance code sticker on the drivers side valve cover.
