Auction in Indiana

Any one know how that Auction Ron Stauffer had in Indiana went. Spoke to a guy at a tractor and steam show in central PA yesterday. He said his son just bought him this 1930 something Ford car. I said where and he showed me the brochure. I asked him if his son knew how much the blue 53 F-100 went for. He said he thinks 'only' 27. I paused, not knowing if he meant $2,700 or 27,000. So I asked if it was $27,000 and he said yes. I said that is a very good price for an F-100.

What do you think?

Did any of you go?

This guy had an industrial engine. Looked like a Y-block. He had the Power King decals on the valve covers. He was not sure of the year, said it could have been a Lincoln Y-block. Started it up, boy did it sound nice...

I didn't go either. Domestic responsibility for one reason, but also knew that for the stuff I'd have had my hand in the air for I'd have been out bid in about two blinks. I've checked the auction web site for results but suspect that's all done some time after the fact. Anybody know what the F-1 MH went for? Or the '52 dealer model feature flip chart? Stu

It's not surprising what the trucks sold for. But $650 for the flip chart! Probably I'd have been out at the opening bid. Sorry I missed the auction, but it's just as well I did. Stu

Keep an eye on Old Cars Weekly, they usually run auction results a couple of weeks after the auction. In the latest issue they had the auction my neighbor went to in Northern Wisconsin two weeks ago, the article even had a picture of the '40 La Salle he bought for $700.

BTW, if you're interested, here's the eBay auction:

Not in this economy. That truck likely cost him over $30k with buyer's premium and possible tax. So, if he only plans on making a few thousand $$ above his purchase price, he'll have a hard time doing it on eBay. eBay has close to a 10% sellers fee from the final sale price.

The other reason he could be selling it is buyer's remorse or the wife/girlfriend put him out of the house after he spent that kind of money on a truck.

Personally, I think that $27k is top dollar for that truck.

I bet one of us can get close to his reserve. Who want to try?

Ilay, I think you should throw a bid of $25K and see if it meets his reserve. Maybe if it's like you suggested, he might just want to get rid of it.

I agree though, with today's economy nothing seems to be moving on eBay and after the eBay's and PayPals' fees, he's going to have to get way over $35K for the truck just to break even. We know there's one fool in the country willing to pay $27K for it, I doubt there's another one willing to pay more.

For that kind of money, I'd expect the radio dial ***** to be correct, as well as an unripped seat and a rubber boot underneath the gas pedal.

Bob, I'll do it, but only if you promise to pay half.

The truck is listed on eBay by Terry Gunter, who has (or at least has had) other MHs. He's also been, in the past anyway, a FTE member. I'll be watching the ebay listing like everybody else to see what the larger world thinks these trucks are worth. Stu

I wonder what it's like to raise you hand to bid in the upper thousands like that. Realize there were at least two people willing to pay at least $26K for the truck. I get nervous when I'm bidding on something in the $100-200 range.

I did cruise over to Portland with my dad on Saturday for the sale. I didn't bid on anything and knew good and well that I wouldn't, but I had some parts to swap with Jordan and I knew it would be a lot of fun to just go and watch anyway. There were some seriously beautiful cars and trucks and it was worth the 120 mile drive just to see them. It was pretty intense when the MH sold. There were only two guys bidding from about $23K up and they were standing about 15 feet apart staring at each other and taking turns nodding their heads. They were going up $500 at a time for a bit and then they slowed down to $250. The guy that bought it never hesitated and nodded as soon as they came back to him but after it passed $25K his opponent was sweating bullets and kept giving his wife nervous looks before he would nod. He finally gave up and just walked away.

Dad bought a couple odd and end parts and when he went up to pay for them, he was shocked by the currency changing hands. Most of the cars went in the low $20K range and these boys brought cash! I guess that it just goes to show that even in a down economy SOMEBODY is doing alright.

Just curious, what do you think was the average age of the bidder at the auction?
