I posted this in the 302 forum but am not getting any feedback so i thought i'd try here.
I am going to be rebuilding my 302 in my pick up, and i'm wondering what i can do to it to beef up the performance on it. One thing i'm going to do is bore it 30 over but i would also like to perform some other mods to it. What are some things you folks would recommend i do for performance. I realize there are probably several things i can do, but some suggestions would be great.
what year pick up? I would suggest a good roller cam if its not already equipped, a big 4 bbl maybe 2, or you could beef up the efi with a new throttle body.... any number of mods, depends on how much you want to spend... here are a few links http://www.jegs.com http://www.summitracing.com
Just keep in mind, an overbore by itself will not increase HP any noticable amount. For the intake, you can go to the Edelbrock truck intake. This intake is good from idle to over 5500rpm. But very $$$$$$ This intake allows you to use all your existing wiring and sensors. If you have some ingenuity you can go with a GT 40 setup. This is the exact same setup run on the 93-95 lightning. They use a single bore T-body and would require a few modifications but flow awesome numbers. Low end on this intake would be noticably less than on the e-bock because of the runner lengths. But above all, get a decent cam in there and keep it mild or you will need to shell out another 700 dollars for a mass air conversion to get the truck to idle right.
Thanks guys, i'm going to check into the intake this evening and also some different T-body's. This is my first rebuild so i may be posting quite a bit for advice.
Do some homework because the EFI on the truck is "speed density" (pretty sure) and it won't take real well to serious mods in regards to heads, cam, etc.. There are things you can do but you need to do some research.
The wildest cam that you can put in it with out screwing up your fuel injection is the factory roller cam out of a Mustang's 5.0 HO.
It does help out alot. It is probably the best upgrade you can do if you plan on keeping your speed density fuel injection. You could go with a wilder on but it will require Ford's $600+ dollar mass air conversion kit.
Thanks everyone you guys are great. So far what i plan to do is port and polish the exhaust ports and the heads, install the factory cam out of the mustang 5.0, and i'm also leaning towards doing the GT 40 set up. I'll let you know how everything turns out, wish me luck!
One more quick question, I'm going to be boring the engine 30 over and need to get new pistons and rings, what are some of the better quality manufacturers, yet reasonable cost wise?
Hey I got a magazine with the 302 efi engine in it, Its called Recipes for success, in muscle mustangs and fast fords it steps up in 25 HP increments. From stock they say with dual exhaust and a nice air filter you should run 250hp then it goes up in 25 hp increments from there. 275-300-325-350-375 each one getting more intense. Ask yourslef this. What are you wanting to do with this truck off road?? Race, quarter mile times?? Want it to sound good? Or just bring it to better than stock performance? Whatever it is you want to do there is an engine setup for you! check it out I think its a Novemeber/december issue. But there is parts to it. lots of parts like part 1 part 2 Part 2 is the one you want I have that issue and will not let it go. Let me know if you need pages scanned and I will send it to you...
Nooooooo! Your stock 5.0 EFI intake flows great, you heads are what suck! Get a good set of those first. Many Mustang peeps use a 5.0 truck lower for supercharged apps, not a GT-40 intake off a Lightning or an Edelbrock.
Get it bored over no more than .030 and get the last .005 done with torque plates. Use ARP hardware also. Stock rods and stock crank will work for a mild hopup. Use at least hypereutetic flat top pistons for comp between 9.0:1 and 10.0:1. You comp will depend on the cc of the heads.
You E7 heads are horrible. Enough said. They don't flow, have tiny valves, and are basically not worth their weight in anything. Get a set of used true GT-40 Cobra heads (will work with stock manifolds) or some GT-40P's. The P's have to have a specific header though. If money allows get a set of aluminum heads like AFR 165's or TFS Twisted Wedge heads. That is where you will make some serious power.
You can get away with a SD air setup, but you will have to get a chip burned for it. I like MAF for its ease.
Get a decent cam like a 208/214 or a 214/220 for even more power. That will still give you low end power plus modeate top end.
