Manual or Automatic

I currently have Warn manual hubs on my 92 F150. I was wondering about changing them back to the Automatic lockouts just for the ease of not getting out of the truck when I need 4wd.

I use 4wd probably of 5+ times a week during the summer, due to work. In the winter, I think I use it once a month.

Any suggestions or recomendations. I do put alot of miles on the truck highway driving as well.

What are the Pro and Cons of both????

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Those auto hubs are great when they work, for the average joe.

But the biggest con is going to be the price.

If your worried about possibly haveing to use 4x4 when your going somewhere, just lock'em when you start your truck, then only engage the 4wd if you need it. Then when you get where your going just unlock'em when you shut the truck down, or just leave them locked till the weather gets better.

GoodLuck!

yo,
I agree with SuperrangerMan!
Stay with the manual hubs is my advice. Our 96 Bronco's OEM auto hubs blew out at 30k miles despite maintenance.
Also, the auto hubs are very expensive: $200.+ per side from Ford on our 96.

Stay with manual hubs, but if you decide you have to have autos, I have a good set I'd like to sell.

just to give you an idea of the cost, right now i'm working on a 95 bronco which has bad auto hubs. fords price for two hubs, (caps, cam/bodies,and nuts) is just shy of 500.00 now they don't need new caps, or nuts, just the cam/body which brings the price down to about 300.00. or a set of warn manual hubs for 100.00 (napa) and a brg. nut kit for 50.00 ( need when changing auto to manuals) they are still half price. and i know which ones i'd use,

marshall,
I think OTC now sells the socket (individually) through var. tool/parts suppliers for less than $10.00 each (for the 95-96's).
Do all the 95's require the newer hub socket? Or was there a mid-year change?

well if your talkin the brg. nut socket it depends. if you have auto hubs on the new years they were just a big thin wall socket. if you have manual hubs you have to use a spanner socket, (has the 4 prongs on it type) can't recall exactly what year we started using the socket (for auto hubs) i would have to look at what year the special service tool kit we got came out. hope this helps ya. sincerely scott

The bearing nuts can be had for $12 plus sh from JBG, and the hubs are much cheaper at other parts stores, like $60-80.

i realy dont't have any say at were we get our parts from, thats between our owner and our parts dept. but as long as we feel that the part is of a certain quality we'll use parts from napa, or some of the other local parts stores. in this case the hubs are warns which is who makes them for ford anyway, yes there are other places that are cheaper but the customer doesn't want to wait, and the manager and owner doesn't want a veh dead in a stall waiting on parts when they're down the road for a little more. ....i know....i know... i know.....but i don't own the shop or make the rules.
