I can't hate ya for being curious about your truck
FWIW - the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) can't really be "disabled", and as such it still needs to be cleaned out. Our trucks use DEF to clean that sucker out. Note the section quoted above where it says that you will have to drive it periodically to regen the DPF, even though it's turned off in PTO mode. To me, that's saying that even though it will be disabled for PTO use, you can only operate in that mode for a certain period of time before you have to go to normal driving so the truck can regen the DPF. In practice... this is the same thing as leaving the emissions on all the time
It is hard to understand the stiff opposition to the DEF. It is a total non-issue. It adds about 3 cents to the price of each gallon of diesel fuel you use. The mileage increases pay for it. It is readily available. Like Epic said, it takes 5 minutes to pour 2.5 gallons into the tank.
Yes I know its only 3 cents, you did a great job with point a while back I see. And your right no problem to put it in.
To the other post we don't clean the filter with DEF, that's used to control NOX.
I'm sure I will not be tearing out my DPF to try this any time soon. But I don't go back to the dealer very offen so they may never see this truck again.
No ruffled feathers LOL
But I did just re read the pdf file and it does say on both PTO modes. OBD and other emission parts are disabled..
I have to get service manuals.
I will have to get to the bottom of this. LOL
To the other post we don't clean the filter with DEF, that's used to control NOX.
I learned something today
I'm not sure where I got that misinformation, but you are correct - DEF is used in the SCR to reduce NOX. A side effect of that reduction is a decrease in the frequency of regen cycles. Also (apparently), the B20 recommendation stems from the DEF's ability to cope with biodiesel's penchant for NOX creation. B100 is usable, but it won't (again, apparently) pass NOX-based emissions requirements. I wonder if the truck will sense the increase in NOX from the use of biodiesel and inject more DEF... but then if it does that, DEF fillups will be more frequent. *sigh*
I hope this link works. I'm not so good at this link stuff. But this is it.
Link worked just fine, however I do not read the statement exactly as you do. While it does say that it turns off OBD and emission-related "monitoring" (i.e. looking for issues or things out of the ordinary), it does not say anything about the systems being disabled.
Yes your right
But if it isn't monitoring the emissions then I'm sure it stops tring to control emissions.
Well I don't know that for sure. That's why I put this all out there.
As I said when I first posted, this may or may not work.
But for the people that want to mess with this new system, this seems like a good built in way to approch the problem of DEF & DPF on the truck.
