I found one thread with suggestion on how to hook up a GPS. I want the power to be switched. The reply was to just splice into a switched power. But how do I find that?
I have a 2000 F250 Diesel 4x4 "super cab" (I call it an extended cab).
The books says that fuse 27 is available but I don't see how to get to the output of it.
Finding switchable power in Ford is tricky. Even CC nd wiper motors are not switchable.
I would go to the fuse panel under the steering wheel and test the fuses, than you can use spade connector to tap there. GPS takes minimal current, so very small wire is required.
This is actually very simple. Ford provides an extra +12V switched wire for this very purpose. Do you know where your customer access wires are? In your truck there are 4 unused wires (red, blue, white, black) that run from the engine compartment (on the right side near the master cylinder) through the firewall and terminate behind the fuse access panel above the OBDC connector. They are provided for whatever purpose the owner needs. On the inside, there is also a spare +12V switch wire provided as well. On my truck it is light blue with a yellow stripe. Just splice into that and you are good to go. Do a search on "customer access" to read more.

I found the white, black, red, and blue wires on both sides of the firewall. That isn't exactly what I was hoping for -- since they are just wires without any power connecting to them.
In the same bundle on the inside is a wire that is blue with a red stripe -- its smaller. It appears, based upon my ohm meter to be hooked to fuse 27 but when I turn on the power, it is not getting any power (but the fuse is).
So... I'm still looking for a wire that is switched.
Go to a parts store, Meijer, Walmart, etc and buy a piggy back fuse holder. It comes with an assortment of fuses and plugs into an existing fuse in the fuse block giving you power and preserving the fuses.

Look further down by the OBDC connector, there should still be one more free wire. I found a wire similar to what you are describing in my truck too - I still haven't figured out what it is for. But there also was a separate +12V switched wire as well. I hooked my CB up to it and it works like a charm.
Find the OBD-II connector to the right of the driver. Follow the wiring loom for it up under the dash. You should find a single, blunt cut wire coming out of the loom and taped to it.
On my truck, I have a group of 5 wires with a wrapper of "Customer Access". The blue, black, red, and white (as described) just go to the other side of the firewall. My guess is these are 14 gauge wires. The 5th is a 16 gauge wire which is blue (perhaps light blue) with a red stripe. It DOES go to fuse 27. I got the engine started and it had power. Pulled the fuse -- no power.
PLUS... as a few mentioned, if you start at the ODB-II connector and go up, there is a cut off wire. 16 gauge. It is blue (or light blue) with yellow. This (today) seems to be just a signal from somewhere.
I didn't hook up the GPS. I'm packing for a trip and I'll try and attack this perhaps Thursday before I leave or I may just wait until I get back. Right now, I have just the ugly GPS cable across the dash and down to the cigarette lighter.
