Transmission Nightmare, Help Please.....

I have a 1990 f150 with a 302 and is four wheel drive. It has the e4od transmission in it. The problem is that is was driving to the store today and just like somebody turned off a light switch, the engine reved and the truck wouldn't move anymore. I towed it home and it would go into reverse and sounded like it would click into low gear but wouldn't move forward, only in reverse! If any of you experts out there have ever heard of this and/or may know what the problem could be your input would be greatly appriciated!! Thanks..........Doug

I did check the fluid and it was fine btw

My father said that something smelled burnt to him but i have a sinus cold and couldn't smell dog poo if i stepped in it so maybe??? Is that fixable? is so what would be involved and how much of a pain in the as* would it be?

it would involve pulling the trans..disassembling and completely rebuilding it.......

Sounds to me that it would cheaper to put another one in it? There a pick-n-pull yard about 20 miles from my house that gets $85 for a tranny. Would i also need a transfer case?

Its a quick fix, but put a quart (whole bottle) of lucas transfix in it (engine must be warmed to operating tempature before you start to add the fluid). Then try your truck in lo1,lo2,d,od and so on. If that helps, its a seal problem, or slipping clutch pack. If it dont help, then you have major transmission damage.
You may also want to check your shifter linkage to ensure that it is properly adjusted. Could be that you broke the linkage and its only engaging the top 3 gears (P,R,N.)
Being a E transmission, did you get a check engine light. If so pull the codes and we will be able to better help you.
