I'm getting ready to break in my non efi 460...the first thing you have to worry about is the camshaft in my opinion if it's flat tappet. My camshaft manufacturer recommends adding specificially formulated "engine break in oil" when you fill it up with dino oil (not synthetic) for the first time. I'll prime the oiling system with an old distributor shaft in a drill running in reverse. Then the instructions are to run the engine at 2000rpm for 20-25 minutes. I haven't gotten any further than that, so maybe someone else will chime in here.

It's not solid lifter so you don't have to get real crazy abt the break in.
Keep it *around* 2K and no load (parked). The speed is just to ensure a good flow of oil to the cam and lifters as they "marry".
Then let it cool down and take a drive.
If it's a whole new street engine things should be tight at first.
Keep the rpms under 3500 and don't push hard.
Vary the rpm's constantly.
Change the oil and filter at 3-5 hundred miles and again at 1500.
Start to drive the truck more normally.
As you put miles on it it will rev more freely, gas mileage and cylinder pressure will noticeably improve.

When I swapped my engine in 2008 didn't use anything like Brad Penn, just a Dino diesel oil with high ZDDP to help prevent galling before everything polished itself.
Don't use synthetic oil during the break in period or you might have ring seating problems.

I hope some of this helps.

To add:
!) I just realized your EFI 460 has Cat's and O2 sensors. I would not use High ZDDP Oil or an additive in this case and would hope the assembly lube would do the job.

2) If and when you prime the pump with the distributor out, be SURE the socket can't fall off the drill. Buy an extended one piece nut driver if you must.

first off i hope you used a good moly lube on the camshaft lobes! Next make sure your dizzy is in right and you have fuel pressure so it will start right up. Use joe gibbs breakin oil and a bottle of ZDDP plus for your breakin. Run it up to 2000-2500 for 20 minutes and youll be good to go. Its important that the motor fires right up so check -check and double check all your settings. have some one standing by to advance the dizzy a little if you see those headers glowing and to look for leaks!!! Its also a good idea to have a fan or two blowing on the motor also

I always leave the water neck and Tstat out while I'm filling the rad, that way I have no big air burp, no temp spike, and don't have to fill it in a hurry while it's running.

Timing, as in how to pit the dizzy in, or where to set it to get going ?
