hey guys have a 1990 f150 5.0 AOD 4x4...trans was shot when i got the truck..so i pulled it rebuilt it and just got it back in...truck runs great but i cannot move the transfer case lever..the light on dash says 4x4 but i cannot move it into 2wd...it will come out of 4x4 and light goes off...but it will either make grinding noises or just be like a neutral, like its between 4wd and 2wd...i even tried pushing on lever with my foot...it will not move....any suggestions? i changed the fluid in my transfer case when i installed the new trans..put new motorcraft mercon 5 in it and nothing abnormal came out...fluid was still bright red...this is my first 4x4 truck so any help appreciated...i am kinda a noob to it...
I am assuming you took the transfer case out and re-installed it? Check you linkage is right and moves freely. My linkage on my 95 gives me problems after I have had it in 4 low I can't get it back into 2 high with out getting under the truck.
If the linkage is ok and free time to start thinking who ever rebuilt it may have made a mistake.....does happen. New snap rings can break etc.
Sorry I should be wearing my glasses I would still go back linkage, get someone to shift it for you while your under it, cause sounds like it not moving far enough.
ok...i will check this....i tried before being under the truck when the handle was disconnected i could not move the linkage with my hands...but i figured it was becuase i didnt have the leverage...
i found the problem...my truck came with a body lift kit so i put it on while the trans was out...the T case lever is hitting on the body...so i heated it up a bit today and bent it straight enough to clear to body...will install this evening when i get home...hopefully it was enough to be able to go into 2wd...
Typically when you install a body lift, you have to lengthen your t-case shifter linkage. I'm betting that you'll find that the linkage is a bit short, and that's why it will not completely engage 2wd
it was just a 3in body...and it was just the bend in the lever made it hit in the front of the hole cut in the floor..so by bending it up a bit, it should clear to go into 2wd
