'76 Noisy/vibrating transfer case/gear shift levers
I'm new to the forums! I'd like some advice/help. My "new to me" '76 F250 4x4 (390, NP 435, Dana 60) has noisy gear shift and transfer case shift levers. They "growl" when I'm driving. A local transmission shop said it's normal for the NP 435, there are no insulating bushings and I should just wrap the levers in foam. Is this correct? I can push the transfer case lever about 1/4 to the left and the noise stops... Engine and trans are strong, no problems other than the noise.

Hallmarkreno, the transmission guy may be right. I've tried to solve my shifter vibration for years (NP435). Everything has been tried; wheel balancing, driveshaft phasing, new transmission and transfer case mounts, fluid change, etc, etc. All this seemed to help a little, but nothing stopped it entirely.
Instead of wrapping foam around it, try cutting a piece of heater hose to length, and insert it on the shifter handles. This will dampen out the vibration, and looks better than tape and foam.

I use foam insulation for 1/2" copper pipe (about $2). Just unscrew the handle and slide it down the shifter. It's black so it looks like it belongs there.

There are two split plastic bushings on the t/c pivot bolt. They may need replacement. I put a long brake spring underneath between the shifter and frame to hold some tension. It eliminated the buzzing noise.
