transfer case not engaging

I have an 86 F150 that I just recently bought, and am trying to fix up. So, I have a few threads I am starting because I haven't seen much in the searches.

Anyway, I can't get the darn thing into any of the 4WD positions. My dad dropped in a rebuilt 4.9L with a rebuilt tranny, and he said when he put the thing in, the transfer case allowed him to engage 4WD from underneath with no problem. But, I can move the selector lever in the cab. I went underneath and disconnected the lever from the selector to the transfer case, but I still can't even budge the transfer case. The front driveshaft rotates freely, and the truck runs fine in 2WD, so I assume there is no problem with fluid levels in the transfer case.

I have tried engaging in park, drive, 1st, 2nd, reverse, neutral, stopped, moving. Nothing seems to make any difference. Is there something someone knows that I do not? Does driving in 2WD for a prolonged time period lock anything up?

Thanks for any help.

So the lever moves, but the front shaft is still free?

Sorry, no. The front shaft is free as it stands right now. The level in the cab will move only if I disengage it from the transfer case. I just did that to make sure the selector lever wasn't frozen somehow.

But I cannot get the transfer case to engage at all. That is, when all the linkages are properly connected, there is no movement of the selector at all.

Don't know if this is important, but I bought the truck 300 miles away, and drove it back with a severly unbalanced rear passenger tire. I had to have 2 pounds of balance added on that tire. Could the 300 miles of crazy shake have knocked something out of whack?

Not likely. Make sure the bellcrank on the t-case shift shaft is mounted the right way. It'll probably fit pointed up OR down, but only one is correct. If one doesn't work, try the other.

i'll try that and see if switching it makes any difference. But, now that you mention it, it does seem like the diagrams in the haynes manual seem that I have it pointed the wrong way. Does that mean that theoretically, if it is upside down, that I have been driving around in 4wd?

No, you'd have been in 4Low, and you'd have noticed that!
