my truck didnt come with a cig. lighter. i got one out of a donor truck and figured i could just run a wire to it to give it power. well, i found a wire tucked in behind the dash (green), with black tape on the end, covering the exposed wire. turns out it is a hot wire, and close to where the cig lighter would be. i put a connector on it and tried to wire it, but everytime i touch it to the cig lighter, it sparks and the lighter glows hot. is this the wrong wire or is the lighter messed up? and do your lighters have constant power, even with the key turned off?
I have a '76 F100. Cig lighter wire is dark green. should have an "L" (90 degree) snap fitting and attach to the center stud on the back of the lighter. It is a constant hot so if you are only using the lighter you're fine. The ground is through the dash when mounted.
However, if you are going to run accessories you may want to pull off the keyed hot, located up behind the left vent under the dash. It is a yellow triangle shaped plug. Male snap-fit end should go right in, pull your wire over and connect to the lighter. That way you won't drain your battery when turned off.
thanks. yea, the wire looks dark green. i wanto use it to charge my phone/gps etc. but i figured ill just unplug it when i shut the truck off. thanks for your help.
sounds like you need to pulled out the cigarette lighter part. it should get hot when its pushed in. so its trying to heat up when you hook it up. I wired mine to the ignition so I can use it with my satellite radio without having to turn it off.
