Oh yah, need them hold-downs - after I had a battery jump in my old car and land on a stud in front of the battery tray and spill acid all over, I've bee strapping every battery in every vehicle I had. Even if it's just a rubber bungee cord, it's better than nothing. My diesel batteries are held in place by pieces of flat stock from Lowes cut and drilled to size, the I got the j-hooks from AutoZone IIRC and cut them down too cause they were like 2" too long - looks decent and works great, I can shake the whole truck by yanking on either battery...
