CPO or not

Sold my 97 F250HD for my asking price and now I am looking for a 08 150 FX4 or XLT supercab.
What is the advantages of buying a Certified Pre Owned, I understand that they go over the truck and to be certified it has to pass this inspection. If the truck is not certified the remainder of the factory warrenty is still passed on to the new owner right? The Ford CPO site its says that 3.9% financing for 60 months is available for certain vehicles. Do these certified trucks cost more than trucks that are not certified? Checking online they prices seem to be about the same with or without the certification.

What is the opinion about the 5.4 for towing, is the 3.73 a must have or will the 3.55 be ok. I will only be towing about 5000 lbs at the most. I want the 3.73 LS but want to know what you guys think. I understand that the FX4 with come with this but havent found too many FX4's in fact I only found one. a 08 with 30,000 miles for $25,499 and this is one that is not certified.

Thanks,

Ken

IMO I would go CPO and buy a Ford ESP for as long as I planned to own the truck.

I know it's bad to pay too much, but when a transmission job can run $4000 or AC well over $1000, I'd like to have the coverage so the job is done by Ford with all the bells and whistles the ESP can offer, like the rental car etc.

I suppose the stats don't bear this out for most buyers, but I've actually come out quite a ways ahead with the ESP--a compliment to the ESP and how you are treated with it, not so much a compliment to my trouble-prone Fords....

YMMV as always.

The factory warranty, unless voided by Ford or expired due to time or mileage, stays with the vehicle regardless of it being a CPO. FWIW, CPO is nothing more then a marketing tool that give prospetive buyers some level of confidence the vehicle they are purchasing is in good shape. (it may not mean the vehicle is any better, get the dealer to print out an OASIS report showing repair history)

ESP is a sensible addition. Do some searching here and find out which dealer sells ESP online at a large discount over that of the dealer you are looking to buy from. Why throw more money away then you have to. I will say, ESP on my 07 was a complete waste of money. I had one warranty repair, a CV joint boot at something like 2000 miles (covered under bumper to bumper warranty). But it's still sensible insurance to have, especially if you can't afford to pony up the mone for a motor or trans or other expensive assemblies.

Last, shop around for your financing. Ford offers crapy rates even if you have great credit. Use Ford Credit only if they are running one of those extra 1K off if financed thru FC. I don't think they do that with CPO.

Good luck with your purchase

CPO runs about the same in my area as non-CPO. If you don't do your own work, Ford's ESP can be a good deal, especially the powertrain warranty. But pay attention to the time and mileage of what is offered. I didn't purchase the Ford ESP when I bought my 06 because the time would have expired the warranty long before the mileage would have. So it isn't likely I would have had a claim on the powertrain. As to towing, I would get the 3.73 gears. I have the 3.55 gears on my 06 and it does ok with my enclosed car hauler that weighs 6800 lbs. loaded. But I think it would do better with the 3.73's.
