Just got my spare block in this weekend. Paid $200 all it needs is the final bore for pistons.
The guy I bought it from let it get rained on. Not too pleased about this fact. The ***** thing is covered in surface rust. I spent two hours with a wire brush on my dremel. Got the crank pretty clean but needs more work.
Any tricks to cleaning it up? I wanna try naval jelly. Just gotta find someone that carries it.
Anyone use muratic acid??
Also. Once it's clean can I just tape off the head surface area and inside parts and spray it down with engine paint??
It's going to the cryo shop in a few weeks so should I just clean it up and take it to them.
I know engine shops will dip the block to clean it. Anyone know what the going price is to truly clean this guy up??

I would use fine emery cloth on the crank and cam since it is only surface rust. Don't want to remove much (any!) metal and move the cloth only in the direction of rotation. It will take some time but should give satisfactory results. If the cylinders are rusty, use a fine cylinder hone or a "flap sander" (I think that's what they're called) to lightly remove the rust. Don't know if the rust has to be removed before boring or not. Fine sand paper on a wood block would work well on the flat surfaces of the block. Hope you have a good supply of the beverage of your choice as you have some work time ahead of you.
