So can anybody tell me what the two brackets that are mounted to either frame rail just behind the dental dam are for? They have nothing attached to them but they appear that they may be there to protect steering linkage( hit brackets before linkage)?

one theory is to help prevent the truck from going over the hood of another car or over the trunk if hitting another vehicle.
anti submarine as suggested above.. so the lower vehicle doesn't go under in a collision. Thought it was a required safety feature on vehicles of a certain frame height.

Sam
Your probably right - But I had one clue that makes me wonder if required..
I was at Covert (183) on Weds. & they had a 250 with Ranch hands on Front & back, Tool box, etc. called the "rancher special" All dealer added .. Plus about 5k added to price tag.. Anyway they had taken those things off - the Ranch Hand actually bolts on the frame in the existing holes where those brackets went..
Can the dealer modify & sell like that if it is a requirement?? Unless the Ranch hand (which has a bar lower than the main pipe) meets the criteria..
I know this is an older post but I think it is a good post. I was looking for some pictures of how this modification turned out for some of you? Did anyone finally just remove the whole air dam and notice a fuel mileage change?

I am hoping to see some of your creative ideas!
Go to my user profile, and then look for my pictures. If you take it off completely it looks sorta lame.
FYI for anyone who searches for this issue, the '11 2WD models do in fact have a lower valence that is what appears to be 2 to 3 inches shorter than the 4WD version.

Saw my first 2WD '11 today so I looked.
Thank you for this info.
If anyone knows a part # that would be much appreciated. I am hoping it fits above fisher plow frame mounts.
I had to do this with my 08. My truck was a job 2 but the job 1 trucks had a smaller dam so I found the part number and it fit perfect.
If you look on fordparts.com you'll find the 2WD air dam for about $85 and the 4WD air dam for about $125.
From what I've seen, the part numbers they use on fordparts.com do not match the actual part numbers that you'd give to the dealer, I don't know why that is but if you buy one from there I suppose it doesn't matter.
I've only looked on there to get an idea of how much a particular part is supposed to cost and then go to the dealer if I want to order it.

Looks like 17626 is a generic number for valance across their line of cars and trucks.
