A couple of days ago my 2006 F150 started running rough, then yesterday it started stalling while idling. Today I take it in to the dealer to have diagnostics run ( thinking in my head all it needs is a tune up) and they tell me the engine is SHOT !!! Shot to the tune of 8 to 9 thousand dollars. I bought this truck brand new in Jan 07, it only has 70K miles on it and all maintenance has been kept up. The dealer claims it has metel shavings in the engine and NO they will not cover a single penny of the work they say it needs. Not only has the check engine light never come on it has never given me a reason to question the integrity of the engine.
Here's my question...Have any of you heard of this happening before or am I the only one ?
Tell them to show you the shavings. I would also get a second opinion before authorizing any work. Your second opinion should come from an independant as the service databases at the local Ford dealerships and affiliated service centers are shared and will bias that second opinion before they even open the hood.
Very good suggestions. Would the shavings show in the oil and would they be obviously visible ? The reason I ask is we had an oil change preformed the day before and they made no mention at all of any problems.
Metal shavings in an internal combustion engine would most definitely show in the oil change. Now if you went to some minimum wage labor in a chain of oil change facilities, you can only expect so much.
I would still expect even those guys should be able to see metal in the oil. After all shavings are shiny specs in blackened oil.
Seeing as it was changed the day before I would tell the dealership you want to watch them pull the shavings from your engine.
Also tell us more about your engine, i.e.; engine size, frequency and type of maintenance, any history, are the plugs and COPS original, any issues, etc. Initially your symptom does not sound that bad and is typical of any one several problems.
Good luck. We love living vicariously through others.
