Can anybody tell me when they started putting catalitics on the 250's?
I have a 79 250 and am pretty sure they had them, however if I dont need them then obviously I dont want any. I have nothing as far as an exhaust system as of yet and am going to be plating this rig soon so I would like to do the pipes asap. I live in Ontario Canada, somebody said I might have to do an emissions test one time to plate it, however I think they are full of ****** lol I guess I should make a phone call and see for myself. thanx
My 79 F350 doesn't...and shop manual doesn't indicate the F250 did (any engine), either. Was based on GVW from what i understand...so the F100 in 79 required cats. But don't take my word for it. Does the engine or inside hood have the emissions/engine sticker. Mine says "non-catalyst." if it was a CA truck it could be a whole different story.
As far as the states go, CA started throwing them in in 76 or 77 I believe (that's how far back the smog ***** test here, they may have been installed earlier though). Seems most other states didn't pick them up until later, if at all.
If your area doesn't test for them, tear it off. Call and get the details if you need to or not. Even installing a new CAT doesn't guarantee you'll pass. Reason I sold my last smog-able vehicle...
F100 and F150's were 79 I am pretty sure. I think MD trucks (250's, and 350's) were a couple of years later. kind of like when they went to OBDII compliance. California is a whole different story.
I took mine ('75 F250 4x4 - light duty) to a muffler shop. They'll stick your information into their computer and should be able to tell you right away. Mine didn't have one.
Been told that if the original came with one, it's illegal for a muffler shop to even work on the exhaust system if your rig no longer has one. Seems like a crazy notion, but IANAL.
I bought a one owner '79 F250 last year that was originally shipped from the factory to Seattle and then to the dealer in Spokane, WA where it was sold (so, not a CA truck). It had a cat and all the heat shields on it when I got it.
I'm sure states differ, but here in WA state shops are not allowed to remove or disable emissions equipment of any kind other than for repair or replacement, including catalytic converters. That said our trucks (at least here) are out of emission requirements so you can do whatever you like in your garage. Check with your state.

I'm in Ontario too. The 79's here didn't have converters originally and you won't need one for your certification. Don't know why they would tell you you need an emission test, pre '87 is exempt.

Awesome thanks man!! i didn't think they needed a test but wasn't sure about the cats themselves, just dont want m.t.o to jerk me around, you know how it is. i should be able to tear off any other emissions junk on her as well then eh??
