Probably Redding....that's right at 500 via I-84 to I-5. US 97 down through Bend and Klamath falls would chop quite a few miles off but I'm wanting to stick to the interstate.

You'll hit Portland at the right time to avoid rush hour, so you should make pretty good time.

Staying on the backside of the mountains is pretty, but slower, that's for sure.

Reading is an easy drive home, too, as YOU'RE well-aware!

I-205 cuts south before you get to Portland and catches I-5 in Tualitin , so we hope to avoid that traffic anyway.

205 is the one that is out by the airport? If so, I know it well, and yes, you'll miss downtown completely.
