The SA called shortly after noon today and again asked if I have been running a tuner. He had the technician who was doing the work speak to me as well. The tech said that he found a cord from an Edge device in the dash and I told them I used an Edge Insight to monitor some engine parameters from time to time. They both insisted that the device must also load and unload tunes, and I repeated that I have never ran any type of tune and that my Insight is nothing more than digital gauges. The tech then said that he was very familiar with the Edge programmers, seemingly implying that I was lying, so I again insisted that the Insight does nothing more than display engine parameters that are monitored by the engine's computer system. The tech then said that he was unable to duplicate the code during a test drive earlier this morning, implying that tunes must be the reason that the P2290 continues to surface for me but not for him.
I responded by saying that I do not want there to be any mistrust, and as proof of my sincerity I reminded them that there is a coolant filter under the hood, an EGT probe hanging out of the exhaust manifold, and a fuel pressure gauge sitting on the dash, none of which I attempted to hide from them. I also offered to bring the Insight and its product literature to them to review.
The SA assured me that there was no mistrust and that they simply needed to know the facts because its their dealership that gets hung for thousands of dollars by FMC if one of their field staff comes out and proves that the issue is caused by a tuner. What I inferred from this statement is that as long as what I told them is the truth, then there would be no issues with FMC about the repair.
The tech then said that his next step will be digging into the HPO system, since the P2290 code implies a lower-than-expected HPO system pressure.
Sounds to me like he's on the right track, since all of my digging on the forums suggest a HPO system leak is the next probable cause for the code, after having already replaced the IPR and ICP.
Also, sometime during our conversation, one of them asked me what kind of oil I run. "5w-40 synthetic", I said. They didn't seem to have a problem with that.
Ford just called with an update, first time I've heard from them since last Thursday (I guess they needed a few days to discuss the Edge cord they found in the dash?)
The Ford engineer has directed them to replace the HPOP.
Seems plausible that the pump is worn out, since the HPO system passes pressure tests and the IPR valve and ICP sensor have both already been replaced.
They said all other possible leak causes within "arm's reach" of the HPOP will also be addressed. (stand pipe o-rings and dummy plugs?)
They say it should be done either tomorrow or Wednesday.
The SA just called and said the truck is done. The tech told him that he found a couple of damaged o-rings while doing the HPOP replacement that could have been the cause of the P2290. The tech was surprised that I wasn't having hard hot starts.
I am extremely impressed with the customer service at this particular dealership and would recommend them to anyone. I have now dealt with three different Service Advisers there and all have been extremely nice, helpful, and understanding.
