6.0 PSD Blue smoke when engine cold
6.0 PSD Blue smoke when engine cold
Hey folks I am new to the diesel world. I bought a used 2007 F350 6.0 (102000 kms), back in may from a GM dealer. As part of their sale they agreed they would pay for the first oil change.
I finally went in last week for the free oil change. I requested that they put in synthetic oil for a diesel engine (15W40) as per the service manual.
They put in Amsoil 15W40.
Since I had the oil changed the truck now belches out blue smoke when the engine is cold and the RPMs are between 1500-2000 rpm, just prior to the shift point. Once the engine warms up there are no issues of blue smoke.
I checked the oil level and it appeared to be a bit high/overfull. I spoke to the local ford service rep to find out if the truck was just venting the excess oil. They said that it was probably the case. I drained about 2/3 of a quart/litre out to bring it down to the proper full level.
The engine still smokes blue when cold, but nothing like it was when it was overfull.
Is this normal due to being overfull, or is it a combination of the oil type (Amsoil) and the overfull condition. I know that many of you do not like Amsoil. I have no experiance with this product, but it is what the dealer put in it.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hey thanks, but are the FORD guys right in saying that it is just excess oil venting, or are they feeding me a line. It is always nice to get a second opinion.
Feeding a line I would say. Absolutely run te Rotella T6 right away. I used to run Motorcraft and at 200,000 km injectors were getting sticky - losing power, fuel economy, hard start etc. I swapped to Rotella and 50 km later the injector issues were cleared up and truck was running like a top! There are a number of other things to do for your 6 litre to get reliability for 450,000 km out of it. There's some good bullet proofing forums here and around the web. Coolant filtration is very important. Cheers.
