Shock orientation

I put an 8” kit on my 2001 7.3 250 in my driveway and put some new shocks in. I put the front and rear with the thin shaft going downward to the axel tube... should the thinner shaft be going towards the body???

The shocks I put on mine have the shafts to the axle. It will vary by the design of the shock. They have remote reservoirs and would only go one way on my truck (07) not sure if the 01's have the same mount top and bottom. If so it's your call.
Some like the tube down so the shaft can't get damaged by rocks etc. Some like the shaft down so the seal will not collect sand and other road grime.

I put boots on mine to protect the shafts and don't have to worry about the seals holding muck.

It depends what kind of shocks did you put on? Most shocks are designed to be installed with the shaft upwards. Then there are some like the bilstein 5100’s for example or the ones that magoo used that install shaft down.
