I've become a real stickler for details. I want to do this chassis thing once, and right. Today, however, wasn't as productive as I'd have liked. Weather became an issue, since I can't get the truck all the way in the garage right now to work on it. But I did get this far:
And of course this...
I wanted to get the frame rails around where the skid plate goes done, so I can get that bolted back up in there. That way it's back on the truck and finished other than some touch-up...and I pretty much got there today til it got too cold to work with paints.
Thanks Gerry. It's a lot of work, but it's worth doing right. Thorough prep and work now with good attention to maintaining the finish should pay off down the road.
OK, so I got a question tonight. I prepped and encapsulated this...
But here's my question. See the edge of the sheetmetal? It's a little beat up. And the fenderwell could use some dressing up. It looks as if it were gray, but I see some hints of black "overspray" (not sure if it was from my rush paint job last summer or not...) too. Obviously, dressing up the chassis is one thing, but to leave that next to a blacked frame - not good. So here's the deal: 1.) What to clean that edge up with and 2.) what goes in the wheelwell - black, gray, or nothing?
And here's what one coat of Chassis Black, sans primer this time, looks like on what I did the other day. I am thinking of just letting it go with that. The area where the fuel tank skid plate is ready to take the skid plate back. I even touched the bolts with CB so they matched.
Clean the edge with a wire brush & apply encapsulator. For the lip, see if you can find some chrome trim (like used on bugshields) to hide the edge. I guess that stuff is still available.
Thanks guys. I will look into the trim, Scott. I think if I paint the wheel well I will go with flat black to replicate the plastic inserts in the front ones.
Busy weekend for me and I got a lot done. First was lining up paint for the hood...a big enough deal. Second, got the frame painted all the way around the back to the passenger door. Still have detail work around the rear axle and touch-ups to hit, but the bulk of it is finished. Just have to go the rest of the way to the front.
The detail around the front suspension will take some work for sure.
