my steering column recently broke i can no longer shift into any gear. i am wondering if there is a way to conncect some sort of pole to my transmission through the floor so i can pull it to shift in and out of gear. my dad says he did it with an older chevy. i have a 92 f-150 2 wheel drive. please if anyone knows how to do this let me know
Why rig it with a rod or whatever? I have what you need sitting on my desk in front of me. There is an aluminum thing that goes from the shifter lever to the cable. My shifter was getting loose, so I ordered that part to replace it, since I read this was a common problem with our trucks. I went to replace it, and found that my problem was only two loose bolts on that part, so I didn't have to use the one I bought. Anybody can replace it with some simple hand tools, and you don't need to drill any holes through your floor. lol. I only paid $45 plus shipping for that part. Think about it and contact me. I'll send it to you for my cost.
The shifter is in a cast tube assembly that runs down the column to the shift cable. The cast is prone to breaking leaving you unable to shift. Happened to my sons 92. Went to the local pull a part and picked up one for less than $10. Took about an hour to make the repair and reinstall the column. Works great now. Not hard at all.
did you have to remove the whole steering column to do this or is it fairly easy to get to it? im not very mechanicaly inclined but i see that u have to take off the steering wheel and im not sure how to get the ignition apart or do i have to take that apart?
You do not have to take off the wheel or the ignition. There are four nuts that hold the column up to the dash. You will have to remove them, unplug the wiring harness, and then remove the cable from the end. the only thing left is to unbolt it from the steering shaft and you can remove the whole colunm. You can do it in the truck but it is easier to remove it. Trust me, my son followed along and he could not change plugs.
well i managed to get the part out it was cracked right in half...question is tho what years of trucks can i pull this part out?? it doesnt have to be a 92 does it? i have the overdrive transmission as well so i guess it wud have to have that in it as well or if i keep the shifter piece itself can i just plug that back in?
it will have to come from a 92-96 column. They are plentiful in the local junk yards and easy to order. LMC has the part you need for $26.95. It is the cast shift tube that breaks and you can replace just that or get the whole thing. Which ever you do you will notice some plastic bushings on the tube, make sure you place some white grease on them.
u guys must be in the states ...ford wants 103 for the part and i called every junkyard in town nobody will sell me the part without selling the entire steering column for 300-400 but one guy says he will sell the part for 100 used lol....i bought it from ford obviously but lost the spring off the end! lol.....has to be ordered in and cant get it till wednesday because of the long weekend ...god bless canada! haha
