I advanced the timing again. truck will drive normally- still- turn it off and give it a few minutes and it wont start. Starter is turning normally- its getting fuel- but because I am working by myself and do not have a remote start- I can not determine if it is getting spark. When it cools competely off- it will start normally. I did check the carb float level when it was running and it is adjusted properly- could this be a carb problem?
In post #13 you said you replaced the coil, condenser and brain box.
If you have the stock ignition system you're working with the Duraspark I.
There is no condenser in this system. There is a control box (module, brain box, black box, that piece of s**t, etc.), ignition coil and pick-up coil. The pickup coil is located in the distributor below the rotor. Have you replaced this? And the control box, did you replace with new or used? Both the module and pickup coil can display the same symptoms when they fail and the DSI wasn't known to be the most reliable system out there.
I know some people will disagree with the following but its worked for me for decades.
First be sure you're in park or neutral, parking brake set.
Turn the ignition key to the "on" position.
Under the hood, on the starter solenoid, unhook the wire from the small "s" terminal.
Hold the coil wire close to a ground. Take a screwdriver and jump from the battery terminal on the solenoid to the "s" terminal.
The engine will now turn over and you can check for spark.
Since I have had a couple of these trucks - I have several coils, brain box, selinoids that were new trying to get projects started. So the stuff I plugged in could be bad- I have had them bad right out of the box. The pickup coil in the Distributor I have the least amount of knowledge of. Can I test this? If so how? Can it be replaced or do I need to buy a reman dist?
