Hi guys, I'm new to this forum. I have a 96 Econoline/Clubwagon Conversion Van (Sherrod). With a 302. 210,000 miles on it. I believe my smog pump is on it's way out. I have already purchased the new one, But my problem is...How the hell do I get the old bolts off. Is there a special tool I need? Or do I do it from inside the van with 10 feet of extensions? Also I only see 2 bolts are there any more? Trying to save a few bucks is turning into a nightmare.
Not sure about the rules where you are at and the smog rules in regards to age/miles. Where I'm at we don't have any environmental inspections. I just took the pulley off and bought a new smaller belt. I left the pump in place. Mine seized and tore the carp out of my belt. If it were me I'd return the pump and buy a new belt - take the difference buy yourself lunch.
I used a string to figure out the new length for the belt and to be sure there were no interference issues.
Oh ya, be sure to write down the length of the new belt with Sharpie under the hood, because you never know.
So you just left everything intact and changed belts. I do have emission testing here in Pa. Although I can get around that. Wouldn't there be problems with the O2 sensors throwing codes, I also heard the cat will eventually overheat.
My cat is LOOOOONG gone. I haven't thrown any codes for a O2. Not sure if you have EEC-IV - OBC or what on a '96. Mine is also a 460, so not sure if what I did applies directly to you.
I got the new belt 92 7/8. If it helps anyone else. But my new problem seems to be, That when I get on it. The alternator light comes on and the Volt gauge Jumps up to 18. Coincidence or do I have a new problem?

I just went through a similar problem with my van and found out that the voltage regulator was bad. First I lost a fusible link and thought the alternator went out (not charging), so I replaced it and the new one had a bad regulator (but tested good) did exactly the same problem you are having. You might check any wires leading to and from alternator to see if you might have accidentally moved one (pulled) or have the alternator checked. I'm not sure but I don't think that changing the belt to a shorter one would make a difference, I have done that in other cars before.
I had the alternator replaced in January of this year. The guy raped me for $600. And then find it was defective too, Had to have it replaced again A week later. This is getting to be a pain in the ***.
Another thing to check is the grounds on the van. Did you have to loosen the alt by chance to get to the smog pump? Make sure everything is tight. Good luck!
No, The belt was an easy on easy off. As it turns out, It was the regulater in the Alternatoer AGAIN. Got that replaced and everything is good for now.
When you guys are removing all the smog pump and the pipe that runs from the back of one head to the other, are the holes threaded so I could screw a plug into them or do I have to find or make some plates to cover the holes? I have a 91 351W.

Thanks, Bill
I did NOT remove anything. I just bought a smaller belt and left everything else in place. I've noticed a difference in pickup and in power. I was told...If it's not in the way, Leave it. And of course what the other great guys in this thread said.
After some research, it appears that the holes are indeed threaded. From the looks of it the thread size is 5/8"-11, and a bolt 3/4" long will do the trick.
I'm just removing it all. I figure if it isn't doing anything, why leave it there to get in the way and add weight, or confuse me later down the road as to why it's there. I'll also be removing the a/c pump and all that related garbage.
