I am getting pretty close to needing the stripe for my orange 1975 Explorer. While I'm not opposed to painting it on if I have to, I would much rather buy it. After reading some posts on this site, I called Phoenix Graphics and they told me they don't make them. Does anybody have another suggestion of some place that might have experience making that particular stripe kit?
There are four different colors:
D5TZ-1320000-E, Black Green Sales has (2) (800)543-4959
Miller Obsolete Parts has (1) (607) 723-5371
D5TZ-1320000-D, Orange Green Sales has (5)
Wesley Obsolete Parts has (1) (606) 787-5293
D5TZ-1320000-B, White I couldn't find any
D5TZ-1320000-C, Yellow Green Sales has (3)
As Bill (NumberDummy) has said, on these stripes, "Caveat Emptor", buyer beware. These have a definite shelf life and after sitting on the shelf for years you might end up using them as a patern to mask the design on the truck to paint them on.
I have haggled over this time and time agian. When I get to that point, I am going to paint them one and be done with it. No one will know for the most part and if your not getting into competative judging, its not going to matter. You can even get your paint guy to give it that raised lip to make it even feel like its a sticker on there. Then your problems of fading, peeling, or cracking are over with, and your truck will look great.
And by the way orange1975, nice to see your sticking with the original look!
Thanks Mike. 35 years is definitely old for decals, but I'm going to call them tomorrow and if the cost isn't too high, I might buy them. Like you said, at least I'd have an exact pattern to paint from if they aren't any good.
Tees,
I am my paint guy. That's why the prospect makes me a little nervous. It was my grandfather's truck for years, so while I've updated some accessories over the years, I will always keep the original paint/stripe scheme. I like the look, and I've only seen one other with that exact scheme in my life, and that one was several states away.
If anybody else has additional ideas, I'm still open to suggestion.
Hello, Was just checking your old post from a couple of years ago and was wondering what you finally did for the Stripes on your 75 Explorer? I've had this same truck since it was new and mine is about to undergo a complete professional restoration itself. I'm even sitting here with an NOS White Stripe kit for it. If it's too old then I'll likely have the stripes painted on. But I'm restoring it to bone stock original. Curious how yours turned out!

That is...if you can peel the outer adhesive backing off without it peeling the inner stripe layer along with it.
Stripe kits dry out causing the adhesive layer to become bonded to the stripe layer. When this occurs, lotsa luck using them.
My project is a '73 Explorer.
I have a stripe kit but will be using it for a pattern only.
I haven't started the paint yet, I'll be doing it myself. The truck is going to be base coat/clear coat in Kona blue/pure white. The roof, stripes and tailgate lettering will be white. The body will be Kona blue.
Fortunately the '73 Explorer stripe is about the simplest one there is.
I plan on the stripe being under the clear coat.
Hmmm. Why couldn't you have one of those companies that do automotive vinyl wraps make the stripe for you? All you would need is a picture of what you want.
