trailer wiring harness

guys, i know this isn't an engine question but would any of you happen to know how i can tell what the colors of the stock trailer wiring harness mean? they are strange colors...

i have a large yellow
large black
large blue with black stripe
large white

green with orange stripe
red with green stripe
orange with blue
black with purple..

i have a 7 pin connector...and none of the colors on this end make sense...im lost with this...i am trying to get this truck up to towing status and i need to solve this before I can fix the trailer brake....help would be appreciated even its directing me somewhere else....thanks guys!!!

You likely will have to use a tester. Large wires are generally ground, hot, trailer brake and I've seen the back up light wire larger.

Red usually hot line, white and black usually grounds.

I would turn on left signal, check wires at rear, mark. Right signal, check at rear and mark. Marker lights, check and mark. The hot wire should be hot all the time unless it's tied in with the key on. Trailer brake should always be hot when you manually move the lever on the brake unit.

Don't know if they are the same, but I have the electrical book for the '89.

The colors are as follows:

Red/Light Green: to trailer brake lamps from electric brake controller
Blue/Black: to trailer brakes from the electric brake controller
White: GROUND
Yellow: Battery power to trailer battery
Black/Pink: To trailer back up lamps
Orange/Light Blue: Trailer RH turn signal/brake lights
Light Green/Orange: Trailer LH turn signal/brake lights

Hope this helps

Lawrence

Lawrence,

You have no idea how much u just cleared that up. The local trailer place couldn't even come up with the other wires meaning....

Thank you, this site never fails to help...

Just need to figure that last wire out and I should be good. Anyone else think of what the large black wire...mayb e 10 gauge..is for?

It is probably the Aux wire that is for charging batts on a TT, or the running lamp positive wire. That would be my best guess.
