Does anyone know what the 2 red wires attached to the bottom of the column about 6-8" above the floor do?They look like they are soldered on a small black plate that's attached to the column. The wires run up into the rest of the wires under the dash.I noticed one of mine is broke loose from the black plate.

I've got the same thing on my 64, and was wondering what they were for, also.
Do you happen to have back up lights on your 64? If so (I'm just guessing here) but it could be for back-up lights.
I've taking my steering column a part and on the inside the A/T shifter tube has a 2 in plastic piece clamped on it with two small copper lines molded into it. And I was wondering what it was for, the only thing I can come up with is that maybe it for the back up lights. I know somebody here will know if I'm wrong.
I was thinking that after I made my last post.I'm pretty sure I've started the truck in neutral before the wire came off.I'll try starting it in neutral now that the wire is off and see what happens.not to be totally dumb, but what does a neutral safety switch do anyway. Thanks for all your help UncSam.

It keeps your car or truck in this case, from starting while in gear. That way the engine will only start with the shifter in neutral or park..

Gotcha.Ok,I just started the truck in both neutral and park.Headlights, tail lights, blinkers, stop lights all work. Now I have no clue what it does.Maybe it's there for back up lights as you said earlier.Doesn't seem to affect anything on the truck as far as starting or lighting goes.I think I'll try and solder it back on anyway just for peace of mind.
Why not put the test light to it and see if it does anything? I like being able to turn my truck over in gear, manual trans, its good to know that if im out wheeling and something happens I can put it in low, lock in 4wd and crank untill I get out of the way or untill my battery dies lol.

Try starting it in Reverse and in Drive and/or Low and it shouldn't even turn over. If it doesn't turn over, that's what it is (a neutral safety switch).

Ford did not offer backup lights (factory or dealer installed) for any Ford truck (or Bronco or Econoline) until 1967.
What some people do is install the tailamps from 1967/72 F100/350 Stylesides (1967/77 Bronco-same-o same-o).
These have backup lenses incorporated into the tail light lenses and will fit like they were made for: 1964/66 F100/250 2WD Stylesides and 1966 F100 4WD Stylesides.
1967/77 F100/350's use the same NSS (Neutral Safety Switch), which also controls the backup lamps: (C7TZ7A247A-(Motorcraft SW600)
The NSS's used prior to 1967 will not control backup lamps, since Ford didn't offer them in these trucks.
1965/77 F100/350 A/T: Will the truck start in any gear? Yes...if the NSS selector lever (DOTZ7B097B replaced C5TZ7B097A) is defective.
This spring steel lever (looks like this: )--- ) snaps onto the shift tube thru a hole in the mast jacket, its knife blade end fits into the NSS.
What happens to it: The knife blade end is notorious for snapping off, or the little darlin' loses tensile strength and falls off the shift tube.
Thank you Bill,UncSam,and 66crawler.At least I now know what it is and what it does.I just tried starting it in PRNDL and it starts in all of the above. So it's either the wire being off,or like Bill suggested,it's defective.Being that I'm the only one here at my house and the only one who will be driving it,I might not even mess with it now that I know what it is for.Thank you all again for the help.
