Steering Column

I have a problem with my 64 F100 with a factory 292/AT.

When the nose is pointing downhill, the truck will pop out of park.

Isnt there a plate in the column that wears, allowing the gear selector to slip out of park?

What is this plate called and are there replacements?

Being a 64, it has the green dot selector.

Also, did my 64 F100 come with self adjusting drums?

1966 was first year for self adjusters. And then only the 12 x 2 1/2 brakes if I recall correctly.

My '64 F100 Operator's Manual, p.41, describes the procedure for backing up the truck to make the brakes "self-adjust". Mine seems to respond to the procedure. NumberDummy, in a post awhile back, stated that most have the self-adjusting parts removed by now (or words to that effect). Let me know if you want a photo of p.41.
Larry

edit: What ND actually stated awhile back was: "The self adjusters were problematic, some dealers/auto repair shops removed them and installed a kit from NAPA that did away with them."

I stand corrected.

OP has an F100, not an F250.

1964 was the first year for self adjusters for F100's (1967 F100's with 4WD). 1953/67 F100's have 11" x 2" front & 11" x 1 3/4" rear brakes.

12" x 2 1/2" brakes introduced in 1966 F250 Camper Specials and other F250's with GVWR's of 7,500 lbs. Self adjusters were standard equipment.

All 1953/65's and some 1966/72 F250's (except Camper Specials and 7,500 lbs. GVWR) have 12 1/8" x 2" brakes. With 12 1/8" x 2" brakes, 1967 was the first year for self adjusters.

I never said that many of these trucks have had the self adjusters removed. What I have said is:

NAPA once sold a kit that took the place of the pesky self adjusters. Dunno if they still have this kit or not.

Pic = Misc self adjuster parts: 2A176/2A177 levers, 2A178 cables (that have a nasty habit of snapping) and 2A179 cable guides.

Only basic part numbers shown in pics, text section required to get the complete part numbers by adding the apropos prefixes and suffixes.

C4UZ-2A176-A .. Lever (Right Front & Rear) / C4UZ-2A177-A .. Lever (Left Front & Rear) / C4TZ-2A178-A .. Cable (R/L F&R) / C1SS-2A179-A .. Cable Guide (R/L F&R).

Applications: 1964/67 E100 / 1964/75 F100 2WD / 1967/75 F100 4WD / 1969/74 E100/200 / 1975 E/F150.

I rebuilt the brakes on my 66 F100. All the parts are available, the parts store kits are generic, the springs are close but not exact matches for the FOMOCO parts. I had to order the cables, no one had them in stock.

Did some web surfing, the problem slipping out of park may be my shift lever, I will pull it out and take a look.

Whoops sorry. F250 centric brain lately. I'll have to buy an F100 so I can stretch the mind. Lol

The tab on the shift lever might be badly worn, might not. Bolted to the upper flange is this little charmer that the tab on the shift lever fits into:

C1TT-7A216-A .. Detent aka Shift Gate aka Insert-Transmission Control Selector Position / 1961/64 F100/250 / Obsolete

People put the trans into Park before setting the hand brake, causing the truck to roll...just enough, that the parking pawl inside the trans locks up.

Now, the shift lever has to be YANKED out of park and sooner or later the individual shift gates of the detent wear down to a nub.

Steering column selector levers at the bottom of the column under the hood have rubber bushings and insulators.

Bushings (C3TZ-7343-A .. Bushing & Insulator Kit-1961/64 F100/250) age crack/disintegrate, shift lever will no longer indicate correct gear.

The shift lever rides on a detente plate. I've done a couple of these on a 64 tbird, but based on the diagram in the LMC catalog, the assembly is similar. With the 'bird, the lever is far softer than the detente, wearing a groove in it over the years.

When I open these up, I often find that someone has ground down or otherwise modified the detente plate to make the worn shift lever work again. If so, you'll need to replace the plate. The lever can be welded up--a mig weld will be harder than the original steel and will last longer.

Here's a photo of the components from the tbird:

Good luck.

Thanks for the help. It looks like the easiest thing to do is pull the shift lever first and look at it. My rubber bushings and isolators are fairly new.

Are there any NOS detent plates still available?
