i am needing to know if a head from a 1992 f-150 FI inline six 4.9l will work on a 82 f-100 4.9l carburated inline six. here r the vins. if anyone has an anwser or a away to find one pleae let me know.
Technically, they interchange. The '92 head will be the fuel injected head. It will give you a little more compression, and it is the "fast burn" chamber design, so you would need to back your ignition timing down a few degrees. IIRC, the '92 head uses different rocker arm studs and the rockers are adjustable compared to the '82 rockers that you just tighten down to the stop. You would have to use the ,92 rocker arms and would have to adjust them properly.
Another thing to consider, the FI heads are more prone to cracking. I have no personal experience along these lines, but I have heard stories from guys who when to the junkyard for a FI head, got it home and cleaned it up only to discover cracks.
If you have a good FI head on hand, it will work. If you are shopping for a head, look for an older head from a carburated engine.
