Aluminum Keys?

Today I got a spare key made for my door locks because I only had one.The guy at the counter noticed something i'd never payed attention to before. The key seems to be aluminum. He said he'd never seen that before. So what i'm wondering is did Ford make aluminum keys?It has the Ford Blue Oval on one side with the "Family of Fine Cars" on the back.It isn't the original key to my truck,as I put in new locks,so I can't tell ya what year the key/locks was from.I got the locks from the junkyard.I was lucky and found the key that works, and it was the aluminum one.

I dont think they are aluminum. I think they are magnesium. Aluminum would wear to fast. I have the original key to my 80

I too still have the original door and truck keys.

It was the first thing ive noticed when i got my truck.

I dont think it is aluminum either because the key is super strong. I was curouis and tried to bend it and it didnt want to budge.

I don't know what they were made of, but I do recall those light weight keys. Mom bought a new 79 thunderbird, and it came with 2 sets of them. Within days, she had 2 new sets of "real" keys made, by the dealer, without any charge.
Oh yeah, the owner of the dealership had special ordered that thunderbird for his wife. It was one of 3 identical cars she got to pick from. She chose the moonroof car, and the parts managers wife got the t-top car, while the truck service manager (dad) got the solid roof one.......... How's that for an interesting twist?

I have one of those lighter keys that unlocks the doors.

I think the reason is to save weight on your keyring, and that helps extend the life of the ignition switch because all that weight from standard keys isn't hanging from it all the time.

The aluminum keys also won't scratch up your steering column as bad as metal ones do.

My truck came with the original aluminum/magnesium/whatever keys. I figure if they've lasted this long, they must be pretty strong. I kinda like them. They're unique.

Alright guys, thanks. Whatever it is isn't that strong, because the aforementioned Ford Oval and Family of Fine cars has worn down quite a bit to where it's barely legible. That and I had a stuck door lock awhile back, and it bent the key. I was able to bend it back.

Needless to say,I'm using the heavier key as the primary.I don't really like the feel of the Aluminum/Magnesium one.

I just bought my 82 F250 last weekend and it came with one original lightweight key and one new chrome/brass key. I thought aluminum too when I first grabbed it.

I am going to make another set and keep the lightweight one as a spare.

I've still got both sets of aluminum keys to my 1981 F-100. They still look and work OK.

I have had both on several Trucks/Bronco. I prefer the heavier keys, but have never bent the lighter ones either

1985 F250 4x4 Diesel(ex)
