Unhappy transmission help

Hi gang...need some advice/opinion on my 00' V10 auto 4x4.

First gear starting acting funny, threw a output shaft sensor code, my local mechanic referred me to a tranny shop near him he claims does fair work.

They advise the test shows first gear problems, etc, blah, they have to pull it (hey I'm a shadetree mechanic but when it comes to tranny's my expertise ends). They call, bad torque converter, overhaul kit, sensors, blah, etc & tell me $3,300 & change.

Now earlier in life I had to get some transmission work done & a few full rebuilds but $3,300 seem crazy. Of course they have me stuck as my tranny is on the floor of their shop. They tried to explain the price index they use, the size of the unit, blah, etc.

Anyone had any experience w/ the price of a complete overhaul on this unit? My head already aching 5 min after I hang up the phone...figured you guys could share opinions & make me feel better (or worse). The darn thing has 170K BUT a selling feature was receipts for all work including full transmission rebuild @ 115K so I figured I was somewhat safe.

Anyone have some thoughts? Thanks!

Guess it depends on where you live. In NJ, A Jasper rebuilt unit is about $3200, a new Ford unit is about $3400. Regular rebuilds run from $2200-2600. Just priced this all out being I just had mine done.

Folks here will probably point you to BTS or John Woods for over $4k but they claim it's the last one you will need.

Right around 4 grand plus shipping gets you a bullet proof transmission that has all new internals, custom machined parts, and a new torque converter from John Wood Automotive, the premier trans builder on the west coast (California).

For about the same price, from BTS (Brians Truck Stop) you get the same thing (new internals, custom machined parts, new torque converter), from the premier trans builder in the mid-west (Arkansas).

Basicically, you're around 11 hours away (Arkansas) from the last transmission you'll ever buy.

LOL, got me by a minute!

I looked up the OP's location in relation to Lead Hill, Arkansas, so I was delayed in posting!

Having worked in a couple transmission shops I have found that the price often depends on how deep they think your pockets are and once your trans is on the bench and apart it depends on how hard of a grip they have on your cojones.
Check your favorite Ford dealer for the price of a reman over the counter. You may be surprised and you get a 36 mo or 100,000 mile warrantee, regardless of who does the install. If Ford did the trans it may still be under warrantee.

Varsity Ford 734-996-2300 xt. 2370 has this to offer online;

Automatic transmission, Transmission
Excursion, 4WD, 6.8L
List Price : $1,933.33
Your Price : $1,546.66

You should be able to do as good at your local dealer.

Good luck with it and let us know the outcome.
