I have a 05 XLT V10 with trailer package and 90k miles on it. I will tow a small (BMW) race car and a open trailer (Steel).
I pulled the trailer last week to the mountains and all that was on it was a mattress and box spring. My truck bonced like the back tires had gone bad! I guess it was the tongue weight on the back end and maybe having the car "balanced" on the trailer will make it better.
But, what should I do to it to make sure it gets better?
Depending on the weight you are towing you may not have to do anything. I know that 6K and below I usually don't even feel anything behind me while towing. How heavy is your BMW and your trailer?
Ok, it didn't bounce as much as feel like the tires had a bad "belt" in them. I'm not sure they are in great shape. Just had them rotated to the back and the tread is good, but even the tire shop said they balanced hard.
The trailer likely weights 2,000 lbs (alum ones weight 1,000). The BMW, depending on which one I haul to track will weight between 2,200 to 3,400 lbs.

5400 pounds max, i wouldn't add anything to my Ex if that was what I was towing!
My X does the same thing with the empty car trailer. My truck also did it. I think it is just the nature of an empty car trailer. When the trailer goes over bumps empty the suspension doesn't give and the trailer bounces causing a jerking/bouncy feeling in the truck. Not much you can do about but get used to it. With a car or truck on the trailer it rides nice and you won't even notice it back there.
BTW my trailer is a all steel 18' road warrior that weighs in at 1800#
