Our F-150 AC has stopped cooling. It blows out air but it is the temp outside. The controls on the dash are set to cool and for the AC. Any ideas? If so, possible cost of repairs.
Thanks
How's the engine running? Any misses in it? Mine will quit working when a COP goes bad. Part of the fail safe BS they put on it. Otherwise, I'd get a set of gauges and check your freon. If it's too low, the compressor won't kick on and cool.......
if your freon checks out ok, make sure the compressor kicks on. if it dosent, try these two things.
first, make sure your getting 12v at the pump. iif you are, then the pump needs replacing. if you arent, move on to this.
locate the high/low pressure sensors. unplug both of them. jump the plugs with a paperclip. this should kick on the pump. it will also raise the RPM at idle.
Make sure you're getting voltage to the high pressure switch . If you do, try jumping it like mix ' n match said. If the compressor comes on then it's probably a bad switch. If you don't have voltage to the switch check the fuses. If you have voltage all the way to the compressor it could be
the compressor clutch. If the compressor is running and it's still not cooling and you have coolant , then the compressor is probably shot.
If any of this sounds complicated, then take it to a shop and have them put it on the gauges. The high side is under a lot of pressure and not something you necessarily want to mess with if you don't have some idea what you are doing.
My clutch recently went out. I had AC occassionally, but it was intermittent. You could actually hit the front of the clutch and it would kick on. You might try giving yours a tap with the handle of the hammer and see what happens.
Replacing the clutch, draining and then refilling the freon all totalled about $300 for me.
Good luck.
