Mercon III vs Mercon V
So I pulled into walmart and went in and asked about oil disposal. The guy said sure thing. Just bring it in and as long as it's not contaminated they will take it. I was like, sweet. I walked around the corner, bought a new big sealable drain pan, and 5 gallons of merc/dex fluid, Carb cleaner and some heavy papertowels and went back to the auto center to pay.
When I paid for it I asked if they needed it back in the original container and he was like, nope. We will just pour it into our tank. Sweet I said...I'll be back in 20 min.
I went out and grabbed my trusty ryobi impact driver and a 10mm, slid unde the truck and drained the pan, zipped off the pan bolts, and carefully pulled the pan down to not harm the gasket.
The pan was shiny clean inside, but the magnet was caked. Fluid was black smokey. I cleaned the magnet and wiped around the gasket and everything. Put the pan back on and put two gallon of fluid in the truck. I had removed a cooler hose and attached one I had int he truck to go into the drainpan. Fired up the truck using my auto starter and watched the crap come out. I continually filled the trans with more fluid until it spit out nice looking stuff. Then another push of the remote shut off the truck and I finished filling the trans with fluid. Replaced the cooler hose and went inside. The guy was like Oh, back already. I'm like, yup. Here you go.
I doubt it took me 30 min in the parkinglot to flush the fluid. Truck shifts about the same. Maybe a little harder now at times but ok. I run it about 1000 miles this weekend towing and it was great.
I'll swap it to mercon v when I do the trans filter, 6liter cooler and external filter.
Fluid after JUST a flush.. I drained the smaller jugs from this flush the other day.. TONS of black crud had settled in the bottom of the jug.

"new"fluid less than 200 miles after the campground flush when I dropped the pan at home. So,as you can see.. after just flushing 20 quarts thru it. there was still TONS of crud..
