E4OD Slips into 1st gear?

Hey all....I've never owned an automatic transmissioned vehicle. I now have a 96 F250 with the E4OD. It seems when I lift off of the brake and transition to the gas that it takes just a bit for the truck to start to move forward. Maybe it's more of driveline slack? It feels like the drive shaft has to "shift" back to the rear differential and then begin applying power, rather than already being there and just applying power.

All that for this: Is this operation normal?

About how long would say the delay is? A slight delay [less than a second] could be considered normal, but a longer delay [longer than a second] could be indicative of a bad TPS or other sensor.

I'd say it's one second or less, more of a "clunk" really.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. There is an inherent amount of drive line slack that causes that "clunk" you are referring too as well as a time delay from the time you move the lever out of Park/Neutral into Drive/Reverse.

I know about that sort of slack. I'm talking about coming up to a red light and stopping, there's a slight "clunk" and then resuming my trip from the green light there's a slight pause and soft "clunk" upon movement.

I have been thinking about this one. Other causes of noise are bad u-joints, excessive play between the ring gear and pinion. Worn spider gears, axle shaft splines, limited slip clutch plates.

Another item to check with minimal effort is the drive shaft slip joint. It can cause symptoms such as vibration or clunking. Easiest way to check is to remove the drive shaft then pull it apart, lube it with a good quality grease then re-assemble. Pay attention to the "clocking" of the u-joint knuckles, best advice is to mark the pieces before disassembling.
