Flashing Wait to Start & Check engine light

1995 F350, stock except for a 60 hp boost from DP Tuner on the computer.

Brief History: In February I converted from a busted E4OD to a ZF5 Manual. I have had no trouble except that cruise did not work. I finally traced wires to a orange with yellow stripe going to what used to be a speed control servo in the auto tranny (pin 6 in the pcm harness). I jumped a hot wire in the same harness to it to see if it would trick the pcm into thinking the servo was there and restore cruise. Truck ran as usual, but still no cruise. I removed the jumper from the wires.

The next morning when I turned on the key the Wait To Start Light and the Check engine light were alternately flashing, and when I cranked it it ran then died, ran then died, over and over in perfect rhythm with the lights. Also the #2 relay in the under the hood fuse box was clicking. The door buzzer also rings in rhythm with lights.

Here is what I have done so far: Checked all fuses, the diode, and the relays ( I checked the relays by plugging them in #3 and tooting the horn to see if they worked ). All are fine. My friend is an professional mechanic so we used is up to date engine diagnostic to check for codes. No codes, but in several of the KOEO tests it failed to link up. In some of the KOER tests, when the diagnostic computer took over, it ran excellent. As soon as the test was over it went back to running poorly. My friend checked with some of his ford guys, and they said it was either pcm or idm. We tried a loaner idm and it resulted in no change to the way it ran, so I bought a new pcm. I installed it and it did not change the way it ran. I also swapped the crankcase position sensor for the new spare one I have, no change, still ran the same. Jody at DP Tuners suggested that it may be the fuel bowl heater, so I unplugged the lead to it and taped it up out of the way. No change.

Any ideas? Could it be something as simple as the glow plug relay shorted out?

Jumping the Orange with Yellow stripe to a hot wire probably was not a good idea.
That wire activates SS1 in an automatic transmission.
What "HOT" wire did you use (color) or pin number?

There are 3 wires with a connector that used to go to the auto tranny. Yellow, Red, and Orange/yell stripe. The yellow had a couple volts, the red had 12v.

I jumped the red wire, I don't know which pin it goes to.

Some more info:
I unhooked the big black/red stripe wire, no change.

I unhooked the 2 small red wires from the glow plug relay by unplugging the connector. When I did this, the wait to start light and check engine light went off, and clicking relay ceased.

How do you test the GPR? Or is this indicative of some other problem?

I just rechecked the relays under the hood to make sure they were all good, and they are.

As I was under the hood, there was also a clicking noise coming from somewhere on the back of the turbo. I couldn't see back there very well. I unplugged the #2 relay, which is the one clicking, and the clicking at the turbo continued.

Once again I unplugged the connector for the 2 small wires on the GPR and both the relay and the turbo quit clicking.

What is back there that could be clicking? A relay or sensor?

More investigation finds that the glow plug relay is clicking also. The 2 small wires that come to it have power, but one flashes the test light with the clicking noise. When it is unplugged, no more clicking and the red/green wire coming in is hot, the other is not.

Ideas?

Are the maxi fuses in the power distribution box under the hood? If so, I have.

I have checked every fuse or relay I can find and all are good!

Did you ever fix this problem? I have a 96 f250 doing the same thing , the problem started after switching my edge tuner from level 2 to level 3. It never started on 3. I have tried back to level 2, then 1, then stock , then back to 2 and still nothing. Only alternating flashing cel and wts lights.

Edge strikes again! I'm putting my money on a toasted PCM. By the way congratulations for resurrecting this thread form the dead! The Edge programmers have been known to ruin the PCM in these trucks. I would put my money on that being the case here as well.

Haha, I thought the same thing when i saw the date on it , but hey , information is information . I just googled it and found this. Anyways , I'm not too sure on the pc prob because I just bought this truck 3 weeks ago non running for $1000 it was sitting at his mechanic shop. His mechanic told him it was a bad computer. When i picked up the truck the mechanic had the pc out of the truck and handed it too me. I am a shadetree mechanic ,and i'm starting a mobile dyno business so i know a few things about cars. I am deffinatly no pro, just hoping the pro was wrong and wanting to start from scratch , when i got home i put the pc back in and tried to start it. No go, but the batteries were dying. I put it on the charger over night and started searching on the internet. The next day i changed the oil and while having my son crank it over, to finish filling that huge filter so i can check the correct level , it just starts up after about 20 seconds of cranking. It has been running beautiful until today. I was even the one who put the edge in and it ran way stronger on level 2(of course). I didn't want to put it on level 3 until i changed the trans fluid and filter , which i did last week along with a bully dog shift enhancer. I have the pc unplugged right now for over night in hopes to start fresh tommorrow.

Good luck with Edge, but I think you're wasting you're time. The Edge programmers have been known to ruin these PCMs (and a lot of other PCM's in other vehicles).

Here is a link if you want to read more on programmers versus a chip and the evils of EDGE.
