So I did something stupid the other day. As I was turning the crank to TDC to check my points gap, I over shot it. Being too lazy to climb down, I turned the fanblade CCW. Twice. And of course the truck backfires now. I tried moving the distributor in hopes that I didn't move the cam timing out, but nothing.
Now what do I do? I'm assuming I need to pull the timing cover and check to see if the gear is missing a tooth? And if not line the two gears up? Thanks.
The fan pulley is on the w/pump. It is not connected to the cam nor crank. You have timing gears connecting the two. One can not move independent of the the other.
Your problem is elsewhere. Once you find and fix the problem, get rid of those sticking points. There are a major PIA.
Static time it with #1 plug out and touching metal, connected to ignition wire. Put at TDC, turn on the key and adjust distributor until the plug fires. Then advance t. ten degrees or so. Run it. If it pings, bump it back a tad.
Old rule of thumb: Advance it until it pings, then bump it back a tad.
Thanks. It was a frigging vac leak! At first I thought it was the darn momojet that was on there, so I finally got the rebuilt YF and same thing. That's when I though timing. Turns out the hold down bolts for the throttle body weren't long enough to get a good bite.
