are the timing gears on a 351 c and 351 m the same? trying to figure out what would have caused new gears and chain to break.auto store may have given me wrong gears and chain.???distributor gear is shredded but cam gear looks ok. getting air pushed out the #1 cylinder but when i turn the motor cam gear doesnt move?W.T.F????
JUST PUT A NEW DISTRIBUTOR IN ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO AND THE GEAR LOOKS LIKE ITS BEEN SLICED UP NOT SMOOTH TRUCK JUST QUIT RUNNING AS I WAS DRIVING.ROTOR DOESNT TURN.TURNED THE MOTOR BY HAND AND CAM GEAR DOENT MOVE.FIGURE THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE AND I JUST REPLACED GEARS AND CHAIN NOT TOO LONG AGO
What exactly are you working on? Sounds more like maybe the wrong gear was on distributor. Now as to why the chain would have broken, thats something you gonna have to dig deeper into.
i have a 77 ford f100 which has a 351 m could have the wrong distributor but should be interchangable between the modified and cleaveland still doesnt explain why the cam isnt moving.must be the timing chain.
It's been a while since I did a timing chain in my 400 so feel free to correct me if my comments are off. I think you might be able to touch or possibly see the timing chain through the fuel pump lever hole so it might be worth while to take the fuel pump out to have a peek. Maybe the crankshaft timing gear has broken in half???
oil pump may have locked up and froze the dist and chattered the dist gear against the camshaft gear. Look down into the hole and see if you can see the pump driveshaft and if it looks straight and watch the oil pressure when you start it again CLOSELY.

I once had the oil pump in my 400 pick up a piece of crud--it was enough to shear off the roll pin in the distributor gear. I found out from a Ford dealership mechanic afterwards that this was something that would occasionally happen--first (and only) time for me.
