I'm one of those that pre-ordered an '08 and did NOT get the step. Why would I need one? Wow what a mistake. A buddy of mine has one and talk about useful. I kick myself everytime I'm messing around in the bed of my truck.
If the dealer accepts my terms, my new 2011 will have the step.
The first time I saw that Chevy commercial, I knew they were making fun of it, b/c they didn't think to put it on their trucks. I think the step is a great feature, it really shows forward thinking in safety and ergonomics.
I use the step all the time, not so much into the pole though--and I've never gone down the step backwards.
Backwards? Never. But the step is extremely useful. I've ripped a few pairs of shorts climbing in my bed the old way. With the step, I'm in and out regardless of attire.
I must be one of the few on here that doesn't have one. I use the drop hitch as a step instead when the bed is closed. If it's open, I just hop my hiney up onto the tailgate and go from there. It ain't pretty to watch though, I admit that.
I love the step, but hated the pole. Amazing to me they could do so well on designing one part and then totally screw up the other. Especially the lame plastic cover over the tailgate that just warps and is a pain to work or set stuff on. Every time I tried to load or unload something it hit the dang thing and jammed it up. Makes it really difficult to try to load dirt bikes, or slide anything long in our out of the bed. Plus it looks like crud after a year.
I removed the pole and put on the cover before I had it and the bed sprayed with Linex. Much, much better. I can actually work on the tailgate now, sit on it and it doesn't look cheesy.
Probably could use it.. Ordered mine without it. Reading all these posts sure makes me want one.. But the one thing i cannot stand is something that rattles. Drives me crazy.. So with little bit of incentive.. I'm happy.
I like the step, perfect for me since I am only 5'6". It is still a little high for my short a$$ wife (4'11") though, funny to watch... The 20" wheels give it a little more height.
It is also helpful getting stuff out of the bed. It is nice that Lowes helps load stuff in your truck, but they don't come home with you to get it out. It makes a nice slide for a controlled decent.
I take my tailgate off whenever I get to go camping, having the man step makes the tail gate really quite heavy, I would not order one because of that, otherwise I would like to have the step to make it easier to get in and out of the back of the truck.
People ask me what the heck that is all the time when we start to load something up in the back, I love my step and really wouldn't want to be without it, I didn't get the bed extender but kinda wish I had that as well.
I have the step and love it but as said above, the pole was designed on a Monday or a Friday. Could be done a lot different/better. Not quite sure what I need the little extra flap of skateboard tape on the step for so I just step on it folded.
I love my Step and Pole. It hasnt been a bother yet loading things. Everyone I help with moving or hauling love the step. Fellow peeps in my Camping club that have dodge/Chevys like my man step and wish they had one.
Old subject, but I finally have something to add. I replaced the pole/handle on my '08 with the tailgate cover from a standard tailgate. It was around $80 from Ford. You also should replace the bolts used to hold the cover down. They are shouldered and will stick up and catch everything slid across the tailgate. Great mod and I saved the cover to put on my new '11. I too love the step but never thought I would! I can get pics if needed.
