I was wondering if anyone else has seen this problem -
On my 04 F-250 6.0L SD, when I press the Tow Haul button, about 50% of the time it works and the tow haul light comes on.
The other times, pressing the button kills all the dashboard lights and gauges - after checking I found that the 20A fuse in slot 45 is blowing (replaced fuse twice so far).
Does engaging tow haul activate any power-consuming load, or am I just looking for a short somewhere in the signal wiring ?
Look for a short in the tow haul button wiring. I think they are kind of notorious for that or used to be. Blown fuse is direct power to ground somewhere. Try to find the wire color from that fuse to the switch.
Update : I pulled the steering wheel shroud off and disconnected the 2 pin connector to the gear lever tow-haul switch - eliminating it from the circuit. I wired up a switch direct to the 2 pin connector - it still blows the fuse. Can I assume I still need to look for a short somewhere further into the steering column ?
A multi-meter can be used to determine which wire is shorted and to assist in locating the short. With power off to the circuit put the multi-meter on the resistance or continuity setting and ground one of the leads and touch the other lead to the wire in question. If you get continuity or very low resistance then the wire is shorted.
I'm not familiar with the ckt. but you cannot ground any hot wire unless there is a resistance before it such as a relay coil. Guaranteed to blow fuses and maybe more.
