Possible new project

I have been looking for a 48-50 ford or mercury project for some time now. I found a 1948 Mercury M-68. I have not went to look at it yet, but the story I have been told is his father in law parked it at the farm 20+ years ago and it has sat there since then.
Are there any specific things I should be looking for? I am hoping I can go check it out in the next week or so.
Let me know what you guys think of it.

Looks pretty straight for a farm truck. Back wheels look new and looks like it has been moved to that spot recently. What are they asking for it?

The truck looks remarkably straight, and rust free, and even has most of its unique stainless trim. I suspect that missing side marker light might be hard to find, though. The worst thing about the '48 to '52 F-3s/F-68s/M-3s was their wheels. They are 17" multi-part style that have been termed "widow makers". The rears have been replaced, but you still have them on the front. Finding wheels to match the rears should not be hard. If you want to find wheels that are stock in appearance, that discussion will become more involved. So let us know what your plans are for the truck. Stu

I thought it looked in pretty decent shape as well. He's was asking $800, but told me he won't go lower than $600, so I guess the price is $600.
My one concern was it being a mercury, will the parts be harder to find? I know a guy locally that has been restoring a 57 Mercury 100 and he said he's had trouble finding some parts for it.

The only difference to my understanding is in the trim. Ford parts should be plentiful. Some of our Merc specialists should comment I'd hope. Stu

Mecury's aren't that much harder to find around here, and there is alot of stuff that is interchangeable. If I were you I would go buy that truck.

Looks like all the Mercury trim is in place on the hood and fenders . You have two Mercury hubcaps which is great and the front fenders look real good. That would sell for 3-4 thousand here in Southern Ontario. Does it have the mercury tailgate? The silver grey ***** and speaker cover in the dash ? If so my advice is buy it. Besides we need another Merc guy on the site.

I am going away on holidays this week, but I called the guy and told him I want to buy it. He said he would hold it for me until I get back. So as long as he doesnt sell it on me, I should be the owner of a 1948 M-68 in a week or so.

Good deal! Make sure he doesn't charge you extra for the window repair.

We agreeed on $600 cdn. For the canadians out there. Will I just need a bill of sale from the last registered owner? He said it was from his father in laws farm yard. Worst case, if his father in law is no longer around, who would I need to get to sign the truck over to me?
I just want to be prepared for when I go pick it up.

Looks like a good deal to me at $600. I looked again at your missing light. You've got the bulb holder so all you need is the chrome bezel and the glass lens. I've got some spare lenses but can't help you with the chrome bezel. They are out there. Congratulation on your truck purchase.

All you need is a bill of sale with the serial # and signed by the seller and you should be good for registering the truck.

$600 CDN or $570 USD is a steal for that truck. All of the Mercury related trim parts and grille are worth just that much.

I don't see a tailgate attached to the bed from the picture. Maybe it's in the bed?? If there's no tailgate, try to have the seller look for it where the truck was parked or in/around any barns/sheds. Mercury tailgates can be hard to find.
